what box for 5ltr in a rangie

Post by YN67highlux »

hey guys.
wondering if anyone has any info on what gearbox should be used for this conversion. its a 84 rangie with a 3.5ltr v8. ive got a 5l statesman at my disposal. will the standard auto box hold up? the statesman has been changed to a manual. the wagon is goin to be used for comps if it makes a differance.
thanks in advance.

T700R4 or T400, depending on whether you need the overdrive or not.

T700 might be the easiest, and the lower first gear is an advantage.

Is your Rangie 3spd or 4spd auto. If its 3spd is it a 727,C4 or a Borge Warner. If its a 4 spd or a 727 or C4 then these are all suitable with some mods to run behind the 5ltr. Out of the 3 the C4 would be my choice but it needs work to handle the HP, although unfortunatly there are no gearing options for the transfer behind the C4.

84 will be a TF727 and will be more than a match for a 5ltr and the LT230 behind it has the highest high range gear of any LT230 at 1.003/1 .
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

The TF727 in the rangie is apparently not the same box used behind high horsepower engines. It is instead the same box used in international scouts.
I had one, sold it to the scrap dealer for about $25. All I really wanted was the high ratio LT230.
