Hi fondente

I don't recognise the "V20" designation you use - it's not a term that applies to Pajeros in Australia, so I'm not sure how to relate your Paj to ours.

If it helps, the ARB front air locker fits any Pajero with the 8" front diff. In Australia, that means Gen 2s with the 3.0V6 and a manual transmission. The 3.0 / auto transmission combination had a smaller (7.5"?) front diff which the ARB locker doesn't fit.

Thanks a lot for the answer... v20 in Eu means second. gen (like my and your one), L040 1 gen. v60 3 gen and v80 4 gen.
So arb fit 3.0v6 manual gear (in Italy there are few 2 gen with auto transm.)
Have 3.5v6/2.8tdi the same front diff like 3.0v6 manual ? 8"
So arb doesn't fit 2.5tdi (very very popular here) cause front diff is a 7.5"...
Every time someone call the italian arb locker distributor for question about mitsu and front diff. they always give different answers...

Gen 1

2.6, 2.3TD, 2.5TD & 2.5TDI (some) :-
front axle = 25 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 7.25" diameter (low pinion)
rear axle = 28 spline, 30.5mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter
3.0V6 :-
front axle = 28 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter (low pinion)
rear axle = 28 spline, 30.5mm diameter, diff = 9" diameter

Gen 2

3.0V6 :-
same as Gen 1 except for NH & NJ auto has 7.25" diameter front diff (high pinion) NH & NJ 5sp man has 8" diameter front diff (high pinion)
2.5TDI :-
same as NH & NJ auto
3.5V6 & 2.8TDI :-
front axle = 28 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter (high pinion)
rear axle = 31 spline, 33.5mm diameter, diff = 9.5" diameter

What does it mean low and high pinion ? Is the pinion height ?

Cool! Thanks for the info.

In our market, the 3.0V6 manual definitely takes the ARB. I would be surprised if other markets used different combinations.

The deciding factor is the size of the diff - the 7.5" diff is too small to bolt the diff locker centre to the crownwheel.

Yes. I believe that is correct.

Correct. If it's a 7.5" diff, it won't fit. (Well, not simply - they say most things are possible if you spend enough time and money...)

We get that here too.

The pinion is the small gear that drives the large gear (crownwheel) in the diff.

These days, the pinion is rarely on the centre line of the axles. In old skool rear wheel drive passenger vehicles, the pinion was moved to below the centreline, so the driveshaft could be lower than the diff centre, which helped improve cabin space.

In 4wds, a high pinion places the driveshaft above the diff centre, further from the ground, which can improve driveshaft angles, improves clearance over rocks, and helps to reduce damage.

The trade-off is more complicated tooth shape ("hypoid"?) and (I believe) increased friction between gear teeth. I believe this is also why some gearbox oils are not suited to use in differentials, as gearboxes are convolute gears, not hypoid - theoretically, convolute gears don't have friction between gear teeth - only in bearings & bushes.

Thanks a lot...
The only thing i haven't understood is why 3.0 front diff is a low pinion and 2.8/3.5 a high one, as told in tech database.

The 3.0 is a high pinion..... identical to the 2.8/3.5 one, but the auto ones are smaller, still high pinion though.

Early Pajeros were low pinion though.

Ok... I've understood... so the differences are just for ratios between 3.0 & 2.8/3.5...
