Hey All, any one fitted a auto locker (Lokka) to the rear in a fulltime 4wd 80? Any dramas? I know its a no go in the front. Cheers.

mate ive recently put a detroit in the rear of my 4runner, i know its a bit different lokker and a different car but its the same principle and its a pain in the ass cause it keeps lockking and then clunking undone when you have even the slightest load on it round a corner or slight bend

Does your 4runner have a center diff lock, same set up as a 80? Is that problem just due to the rear diff lock's operation or is it a result of combining a rear auto locker with a center diff? cheers.

Nah mate manual transfer case it's just the way the locker is.

a detroit is the only auto locker i would consider i had one in the front of a 94 hilux and one in the rear of my v8 40 series. Both were fine once you learnt to drive with them.
The one in the hilux started in the rear but got moved to the front because it was an every day driver and i got sick of it. Plus there hard on wear and tear.
I would never consider one in a constant 4wd or a car that i was likly to drive daily.
I like most others have ended up with air lockers and stuck with them.

if i was you i wouldnt waste money on a auto locker. i got air lockers in my 80 and they work like a dream, got a mate with an auto locker is his jeep (junk anyways) but just the sounds it makes and the way they work i wouldnt trust them for very long.
id just bite the bullet and spend the money on air lockers if i were you. or those new electromagnetic lockers, dunno how good they are tho.

Cheers for the info fellas, think i'll have to go for a drive in one with this setup before i buy it to see if its tolerable on the road, as my 80 is my daily rig but also she's a roughy and i'm not that keen spending too much on it, hence the lokka idea.

The way I see it working is when going in a straight line, nothing would be any different to normal. But when going round a corner the centre diff will be differenciating (??) more than normal as the rear driveshaft would be turning less than the front.
But isn't this exactly what it does and why its there in full timers?

No, a fulltime 80 has an open centre in the front not an lsd nor a autolocker. Bad bad idea. Its the same for my mates old 80 series with fulltime 4wd and a lockright lokka. Wasnt pretty. Even when front shaft was removed. The ONLY way you can run them without getting huge backlash is by running free wheeling hubs and a vicious diff centre in your transfer. They dont engadge or disengadge as perfectly as you would hope. The only locker that you can run in a fulltime 4wd set up is an air locker.

I agree they would probably be a bad idea in the front of a full timer as the operation of these lockers usually has allot to do with backlash. The less backlash in the system the better they operate. The front end is notoriuos for excessive backlash on these rigs and partly the reason I have a part time kit in mine.
Come to think of it the backlash problem (which goes through the centre diff to the rear axle also) is probably why they are not recommended in the rear either. Asnwered my own question!

Oh I thought he was talking about the front diff!! Otherwise where does a full time 4wd part come into it. It wouldnt matter at all if it was fulltime if the locker is in the rear. But I had a detroit in the rear of my cruiser for a while (full detroit, the older version) and even after you learn to drive it and pop the clutch propperly in corners. Bunny hops, chews tyres out heaps, breaks floating axles etc etc. I had it in there for 2 years until I broke it to peaces. Metal everywhere, broken side gears and bearing. I still stand by air lockers for road/offroad use.
