80 Series Auto Antenna
Hi,
So I want to put an electric antenna into my 80 series. It currently has a snapped non power one. Over the last few weeks I have managed to get hold of a Power Antenna, the Power Antenna Relay and the UP/DOWN stitch that goes on the dash. I have looked at the wiring diagram in the book and I can't make much sense of it, and most of the wires appear to be different colours. So tonight I plugged it all in to test if it worked before I actually pull the car apart to install it all, and I can not get it to work. The wiring diagram mentions some fuses, but it doesn't say where they are, so I can't even check them.
Does anyone know:
If I have missed anything for my installation, or if there are any Toyota Traps I have fallen into?
Where I can find the fuses?
If the radio/stereo needs to send something to the antenna? (It has an after market CD player installed, which was in it when I got it, so maybe I need to play with that)
How I can test each of the components to see if they have power and are functioning correctly?
Where I might an accurate wiring diagram?

there are two types of electric antennas that i've seen. one has an up/down button, and the other has an up/down button with an automatic overide button aswell. If the wiring is in your truck already, and you have the parts from the right year it should plug and play. The antenna runs off the dome fuse.
Here's the wiring diagram for the early models, from the toyota workshop manual. I don't have any later one so I don't know if the wiring differs.
It's possible the relay needs the signal from the stereo to operate the antenna, even manually. If all else fails it might be easy enough to wire the button straight to the antenna, ditching the relay.

Yeah I think the antenna I have has the auto functionality (two plugs), but the switch is just an up/down. I thought this would still work, with no auto function. Looking at the wiring diagram I initially thought it should work with just the switch, and no relay. However that was not the case, so I got the relay. I actually got one from an early model from the wreckers, as mine is a 1993, but it wouldn't plug in. I got the relay of a guy who had a 1993 as well, but his was the same relay I had from the wreckers, which doesn't fit. He gave me the one out of his 1994 Sahara, which plugged in no problems at all.
Looks like I will have to try and trace all the wiring, as I am pretty sure all those fuses are working. Maybe I have to try tricking it into thinking the radio is on all the time, can somebody tell me who the up/down antenna actually works? Like does it go down when the radio is turned off? or is that what the auto function is for? Can you put it up or down with the radio off?

Unfortunately I cannot tell you either as I could not get mine to work either and mine is a Sahara with all the factory bits installed. You will need a signal from the headunit but I could not work out which wire/s it was as the Sahara or US stereo system is more complex and confusing. However when you say you have the relay do you mean the cigarette packet sized box, as it is more of an ECU as I understand it than a simple relay. Also don't forget the negative switching of the Toyotas which can confuse the issue too. From memory I had some blue traced wires which I could apply power to to test the actual antennae so it was fine but my problem was/is in dodgy ECU or I just could not work out which wire in the factory loom to hook the trigger from the headunit to. The up down power wires were blue with I think green and yellow traces but can;t remember which is which. If you do test the antennae through these be careful and unplug the ECU. I tested with it all hooked up and later foound the wiring had melted through the insulation, might have also fried the ECU. I've rewired that little bit but haven't hooked in new ECU so no further help I'm afraid.
Do you want the manual up/down, maybe you'd be better with just an aftermarket antennae that is auto up with power form headunit and auto down when it's turned off. Certainly easier to wire up.

If you work it out let us know. Mine already had an aftermarket headunit and the wiring changed around a bit. I did find a wiring diagram but it really wasn't that easy to follow and every wire that appeared like ti was he trigger did not do anything. Can't remember too much as I gave up ages ago and truck is off the road. My drama could have been a fried relay, and the fact the antennae was partially seized which may have contributed to past unsucessful attempts to work correctly. When front end is back in I'll start looking againt too.

So I started tracing the wires last night and this morning after pulling the dash apart. Here is what I have found.
My switch uses 4 pins (+2 for the light globes) they are Blue-Yellow, Blue, Blue-White, and White-Black.
I suspect that the B-Y and B wires are the L and L-Y (L=Light Blue, so close enough I think). as the diagrams show, there is continuity to the W-B wire with the switches in normal. As you press the Up/Down buttons, continuity is removed, as the diagram suggests. I can't work out which wire is the GR wire.
I traced the Blue-Yellow and Blue wire to the switch as the drawing suggests, nothing. No continuity. However they do go back to the Antenna ECU as B and B-Y, so that part seems fine.
After pulling out the radio, to find that instead of using a conversion plug like most people, the installer of the cd player has cut al the plugs off and direct wired it to the Toyota loom. There are 4 wires that go to nowhere, and a little 2 pin plug not used. Behind the radio I found where all the Antenna, ECT, Difflock and Demister switches join the loom. At this point the B-Y and B wires from before change to Orange and Yellow wires. The B-W and W-Bk remain the same. All 4 wires can be traced back to the ECU plug.
So, it appears the wiring diagram I have is a little wrong. There is no direct connection between the switch and the antenna, it must go through the ECU. Does anyone have a late model wiring diagram. Also the pins on the diagrams I have don't match up, and Toyota has kindly written the pin numbers on the ECU, so I at least have an initial reference.

So I went and bought another Repair Manual that has the later model wiring diagram. I have traced and tested all the wires and they are all where they should be. I am left with 4 wires at the head unit that go back to the ECU. I'm guessing 1 or more of there is going to tell the ECU when the radio is on ect. Does anyone know which wires are which on a standard cd/radio? my plug has been cut off so I have no idea what's what.

Doesn't the wiring diagram show what the wires are from the ECU to the factory stereo are, and what the colours of those wires are?

If non-factory, you might need to search on the net for that paricular brand/model, and see if you can find the pinout/wiring colours for it.

Seems like the same dramas I had but with the Sahara having the amp and other stuff (can't remember some wiring mihgt show CD changer) and having all 3 plugs cut off its very hard to follow. I tried several wires that I thought might be trigger but nothing. From memeory red/yellow comes to mind. If I also recall connecting power to the blue/white and blue/yellow and whatever the other is make the anntennae drive fine. This are easily confirmed on the antennae plug end.
Most aftermarket headunits used to use blue for antennae trigger not sure if that has changed since amp triggering has become so popular these days.

From memory, the wiring diagram shows the same questionable wires going to either CD Player, Non-CD Player as well as the amp. So I assume it's common actoss the models. Maybe if I listed the wires in question, and the pins on the ECU/Relay end, somebody could test which of the 4 wires has power, and when. I'm happy just to have the antenna live all the time, but if I could get it to auto go up or down would be a sweet feature. My goal is to wire it into the diff lock switch like some other people have done. Has anybody done this and could let us know which wire they used?

I'm assuming you're wiring to the diff lock switch so that it shuts down when diff lock activated and hence retracted for off road, or is there some other reason to do so. If that is the case I can't see the benefit cuase if you are travesing forestry like tracks you don't necessarily need to lock in the diff lock unless the terrain is hard yet you could be traversing gentler terrain that is overgrown enough to cause damage to erect antennae. Is it some other reason.

That was the reason and you do have a point. It was more a safety feature. Your right, if I need diff lock, the antenna should be down already. but it was just a matter of, if its not...then it will be.

If you really want a failsafe hook it into the CDL switch or CDL trigger wire. If you still have full time 4wd then it will trigger in low range and when you use the switch in high. If you have part time kit then it will trigger when you hit the switch in either low or high. Most likely you will be hitting the CDL sttraight up before you get into the undergrowth. Me I don't see a need cause mostly were we wheel in the forestry up here you pretty much loose radio reception before you get into teh scrub or very shortl thereafter at which point the CD or Ipod gets the gong and the antennae gets shut down as part of that process. I always liked the Nissan half mast option actually as the best of both worlds.

Yeah sorry, when I say Diff lock I mean CDL. Still it would be nice just to have it working.
