Bonnet modification/new resin bonnet?

Post by vanbox »

Im chasing some options for having some more room in the engine bay. Alternator hits bonnet only just (bonnet latches, doesnt lock)

I DONT want to run a scoop. I dont like them personally, and where I would need to put it would look disgusting. (in my opinion of course).

Here is my idea:
Providing there is enough clearance, I would like to get another bonnet (GU) and graft the bulge in the rear centre of the bonnet further towards the bullbar. The alternator hits the low part of the bonnet just below the bulge. (roughly where the antenna crosses the bulge in this pic)>>>

Image

I have tried a few panelbeater mates that want to "chuck a scoop on it" and dont seem to interested in something like this. I have tried a couple of fiberglass bonnet makers and they didnt seem interested. I am willing to pay but to some that doesnt seem enough.

So what are your opinions? Is there something else I could do instead without being too obvious? Can you recommend anyone in the south east qld area willing to do this in steel/glass/kevlar?

Open to all suggestions, ideas.

cheers

Hey mate,
Ask sheridan who did the bonnet for that green GQ, They basically added a 2nd bulge on top of the original one. Come up real good, looks factory.

It would HAVE to be easier to relocate the alternator wouldn't it?

Had considered the bulge, just not sure on cost compared to carrying the same lines a bit further down. Also concerned about my visibility.

Cheers Steve, Heath told me it come up well, Ill have to give him ago.

Already looked into moving alternator. Cant be done.

Already got a bodylift ;)

hey paul have u hit up any of the ricer boys?

i wanted a similar mod done to my fender and found a few ricer mobs that do heaps of custom glass ricer kits and they gave me some reasonable quotes, sorry can't remember how much but was bucket loads cheaper then buying a hood off the new fenders with a raised bonnet. i started looking in the trading post etc, for mobs that sell modified hoods, body kits, etc

You don't like scoops and I agree pretty much especially if they are talking about the good old Holden Torana or other period style scoops. However what about what the English sports car brigade like to call power bulges. I've seen some fro my old MG days that looked pretty neat. Basically like a torpedo or teardrop style bulge in the bonnet just above the alternator and just big enough to clear it, or one on each side if you want symetry.

Just stay away from the Roothy style of bonnet clearance of 3 inch square hole.

I have seen a JT bonnet and it had to be modified to make fit!. Owner wasnt real happy with it.

I may get away without modifying the bonnet. Got it to shut after cutting a brace off and grinding down some of the cast housing of the alternator. Nothing structurally wrong with it. Gearbox is out at the moment so it was hard to prop the engine up to its finished plane. Will find out soon.

There's no need to buy and sacrifice a GU bonnet, or even to buy scoops or bulges. Any sheet metal fabricator worth their salt will be able to shape a step up like that out of panel steel and graft it onto your bonnet.

Go talk to a quality panel beater in your area

It may be more effort than its worth, but could lower the whole engine with new engine mounts?

Oh I dont doubt that someone could do it. And I may still get something done. Just the few that I have asked are lacking confidence in their words, which Doesnt make me want to throw $$$ and
panels at them based on a "umm".

Motor needs to be that high to allow max flex without hitting the sump. Bump stops have been extended too.

You could always booty fab it like Greg Scanlon and just cut a hole in the bonnet and put a guard in front of it. Works for him.
