Powdercoat vs 2Pack

Hey all,
i have a 2 year old bullbar that has been powdercoated, but it is wearing off in places, some from inpacts but some in places that hardly even gets dust, let alone taking a hit.

now the paint on my car is 17 years old, and even in the dented areas it shows little to no sign of cracking off... so this begs the question, why powdercoat?

i had always been led to believe that powdercoat is much more durable (hence why i requested powdercoat for the bar when asked if i wanted that or 2pack), but it seems that instead it just gets a crack, then comes off in big flakes...

the bar is starting to look shit from where the exposed areas are now starting to surface rust, and as such im considering taking it all back to bare metal and painting it... i

so, is it worth re-painting? whats the pros and cons of 2k vs powdercoat?

Powdercoat should not flake of if this is the case then something is wrong with the adhesion to the base metal. This can commonly occur if the powdercoat is under cured.

Usually this should not occur in the case of powdercoat it should be more durable over 2 pack. The advantage of 2 pack is that if you scratch damage it you can repair easily with a quick coat. This can not be done with powdercoat you would have to get a colour match and does not blend as well.

You should consider a good etch primer with a top coat of satin black industrial laquer.

I have painted many components this way and it is very durable.

"Protec" Industrial laquer (black)








Gives a really good finish and sheen and is tough as once all cured.

Personally I'd get it blasted and painted with a good quality Zinc coating before any intermediate primers and colours are applied

Most of the powder coat I work with is rubbish and in my personal opinion not suitable for exterior use or for use on steel, it comes off in large flakes because the surface hasn't been properly prepared (ie blasted/primed) and once that starts the surface will rust under the edge and keep flaking off (look at old wrought iron outdoor furniture heaps of it does this). I personally don't believe it is as durable as 2K paint as it is TOO hard and has no flexibility in it. Apart from that you can touch paint up, not so with powdercoat

Agreed, A large problem is it's frequently used for industrial purposes, so a lot of mobs can be a bit on the slack side when it comes to quality. Powercoat doesn't lik to flex, but it takes a lot more than most realize, due to y above point, we used to have a massive customer they only sent small jobs to us they wanted quality on compared to the other mobs that handles there bigger jobs, I always felt wrong about sending out that stuff, it was shitful but they classed it as much higher quality than the rest of the mobs they use.
Some people just do a job for a paycheque.

You can touch up powdercoat just not as easily and there's a few tricks for certain colours.

at the end of the day paint just as bad if not applied correctly, prep work done

the uv is the main concern with powdercoat, It's not always as good, but obviously different colours play a major roll in that..

i can get 4 rims blast powder coated for 140 bucks youd be looking at the same for that bar!
for that why would you bother?
but then again its gonna get beatn up on so yeh just paint it protec is a good product satin black urethane is it 606?product line!
wattyl colorthane is good also and they do a metalic effect ,various colours in a one step application,its good shit!
