Power upgrades to 4.8
Power upgrades to 4.8
Does anyone know about squeezing some more power out of the 4.8s . Getting extractors for it . without going stupid on a stroker kit or a wild turbo setup is there any other ways???? cheers
Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
i believe there is a chip that you can get for it to give it more power, in fact the 4.8's are pretty tame tuned by the Nissan ECU
AA's for Quitters
Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
For easy mods I would say a good cam would be a good starting point.

After that I would look at a exhaust and extractors. The air supply to the airbox fairly small diameter so a good snorkel and pipe work to the airbox would help.
These would be nice

I've been looking for a while for easy tb48 mods come to the conclusion that a turbo is the easyest way to go. Look around at various sites it seems 275kw is possible with a basic turbo set up, with an unopened engine. The most power i've heard of from a Na engine is 185kw this required opening the engine for modifications and an after market ECU.

Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
185kw? that must be rear wheel right?
Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
After being down a similar road I would suggest you stop now and keep saving for a turbo.
You will easily spend 2500 grand+ minimum for basic mods like exhaust and chip and filter etc then add heaps more for cams etc. You will get bored with it real quick and still not have the power you want.
Turbo it. Doesn't need to be fancy or high boost but the rewards will be worth the spend.

Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
Yeah mate I hear what your saying and sort of thinking to just turbo it and be done with it, Have you got one? have you turboed it? alot of the kits i have seen are with large turbos but i dont want somethin that will have no torque and 700hp at 6000rpm no what i mean, i dont know a great deal about turbos :( but thanks for advice matefatassgq wrote:After being down a similar road I would suggest you stop now and keep saving for a turbo.

Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
We dynotune quite a lot of these, their design enables you us to optimize the timing for premium without any parts. Fuel and timing can be optimized through the whole map with a chip for about $1600 ish, the use of premium is required for the best results.

Thanks for your advice joel. Roughly how much power gain is expected with this chip and dyno??PGS 4WD wrote:We dynotune quite a lot of these, their design enables you us to optimize the timing for premium without any parts. Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
I no longer have it but I used to own a 4.8 manual. I put an exhaust with extractors on it, filter upgrade and a unichip and while it was good it was not really exciting considering the costs involved. I think it ended up with about 140kw at the wheels on 305/75/16 mud tyres.
The 4.8 is a massive motor mate and multivalve too so it breaths a lot of air so that would be why the turbos 'look big'. Talk to someone who has done some 4.8 turbos for you options. There seem to be more and more of em around now. You don't need to go stupid with the set up just safe.
But I know what it is like with coin and if ya don't have it ya don't have it. In reality I reckon you could easily spend 10k or more turboing one (basic) and that is a lot of coin to throw. I was just saying sometimes it it better to just save for longer to get the better option rather than spend half only to be left wanting. jmo

Yes rear wheel kw on 35s.turbmav wrote:185kw? that must be rear wheel right?
Also found a guy in Dubai that got 350bhp at the rear with the full brian crower kit, no turbo.
These guys do a turbo kit.

Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
Yeah I can understand what your sayin mate, 140rwkw is ok but I have been told there nearly 120rwkw standard untouched so when you take into account all them mods you have done for a rough 20+ rwkw its not really worth it. I have spoken to a couple blokes around qld about turbo setups couple have been helpful but I honestly cant see where the money is in these turbo kits these days the average kit is nearly 10k like you say and for what? the turbos are barely worth 2k so whats the rest? a manifold which isnt brain surgery to make, bit of pipe work, few clamps and some large injectors and a tune.I dont know. I have come across a cheap setup from U.S but I cant understand why this kit is complete with everything intercooler and all for like 1400 + 300 postage. Il try and find the link so can have a look.My power aim is roughly around 200rwkw and ill be happy, for a motor this size surely I shouldnt have to spend a fortune to get this power at the back feet thanks for ya help, at least I know where im heading now, fatassgq wrote:I no longer have it but I used to own a 4.8 manual. Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
Yeah them crower kits are good from what i seen but i dont see the point of goin to the expense of installing a stroker kit on a perfectly fine motor, thats why im leaning towards a turbo setup most likely, cheers for helpAFeral wrote:Yes rear wheel kw on 35s.turbmav wrote:185kw? that must be rear wheel right?

Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
I can see where the money is spent myself. Turbo, injectors, fuel reg, oil line, water lines, after market ecu, wiring and tuning. There's $6000 worth easy, then there's pipe work, turbo manifold, intercooler, brackets, nut, bolts and all those little things you don't think about till you start.
The five speed auto's are not known for there strength, mods maybe need there too. For a manual gearbox an upgraded clutch would be a good idea too.
For turbo applications I have been recommended to upgrade the oil pump too.
Not trying to be negative this is an option i'm looking at myself, luckly I have under taken some of the mods required for the turbo conversion already.

Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
I though you didn't want to go the turbo option or spend truck loads? The Crower kit is great but not cheap, nor is any decent turbo upgrade. Fuel system, management plus turbo, pipework, cooler and so on. That sort of stuff is minimum 10k

Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
Hey mate yeah i have the tiptronic auto, I have been told they can handle quite a punishment? I personally dont know. there a very large box so surely they can handle abit. Are you in the process of turboing yours? Im very still undecided on which way to go, here is a link with a cheap turbo setup as i will be happy with around 200rwkw i think this setup tuned and whatever i will nearly have that. Have a look and I welcome anyones thoughts. cheersAFeral wrote:I can see where the money is spent myself. Turbo, injectors, fuel reg, oil line, water lines, after market ecu, wiring and tuning. Re: Power upgrades to 4.8
Turbo kit looks intresting, what quality is the turbo though ? I'm guessing its a chinese. That kit will still require a turbo manifold injectors and an ecu to run it all.
I started with a 5 speed auto, could not get a straight answer on how well the would handle the power. Some people sayed no worries, other no way. Kewish auto's in Vic will build and manulise a 5 speed they rate them for 220kw after. Where as a 4 speed they will build and manulise for 440kw maybe more. The only problem was price tag $4000. I ended up going with the manual gearbox, if and when funds allow I will get a 4speed auto built.
