Ok some of you may have followed my thread in the general tech section a few weeks ago but for those that didn't heres what happened, I was driving to work cruising along in fith gear when i heard a 'clunk', and lost all drive(FYI- it's a 92 triton). Now i got it home and ripped the box out and had a look inside it (just through the belly pan) and there is a few gears broken and teeth stripeded ect...Any way got a few quotes to get it rebuilt all starting upwards of $1200. Now it was sugested that i might be able to use a second hand gearbox out of a early model pajero as they both run the 4g54 (2.6lt astron) which would be great as a mate has a spare one sitting in his shed that i can have. So i rang mitsubishi up to suss out weather they were the same box, so they checked the part numbers ect... but the came back different but they couldnt tell me exactly what was different, Now as far as I can see looking at them side by side they are the same (externly atleast) apart from the fact that the pajero uses a hydrolic clutch where as my triton is a cable clutch. Now my question is there any reason why i couldnt just swap they belhousings over (ie put the good internals into my gear box) if that makes sense?

G'day not 100% sure if there the same box, but the later mj's had hydraulic clutch, so maybe just because it's slightly oldr etc.
or it could just be a wrong gearing going from a bigger rig.
Have you got both boxes out? measured input shafts etc.?
to be honest being manual it may be worth jut bolting it up and see what happens.
Don't forget the speedo drive as I think the jerry's had bigger wheels.
If you have both boxes out and want to compare the gears, whack both into the same gear, and rotate1 shaft and see how may many revs you get out of the the other side for one turn.
try it with each gear to compare them all.

Hi fellas, new to this site today and getting some really good info but not exactly what i need to know. would be good to hear if someone can help! I have 2 tritons and my girlfriend has one as well. she has a 95 mod 4x4 2.6ltr double cab with a strange problem with going into gears. We almost made it to the goldy the other week from 600k south and in-between 1st and 2nd gear changes the gearbox jammed. this stalled the car and skidded the car to a stop . the gearstick was locked but later tried everything to move it and forced the gearstick to then free the gears and resume on our way. in the months prior to this it was becoming more and more difficult to change gears as if all synchros were stuffed or possibly clutch not fully engaging or something. clutch is worn and will be replaced but this shouldn’t cause the problem?? it changes gears easily if you match revs to the correct rev to match the ground speed for that gear. grinds alot and hard to get into reverse. I have replaced the nylon bush and end plastic cap thing on gear stick itself thinking it could help but still has same issue. need to know if my spare 92 2.5td gearbox will fit it also is it may be a solution?? i can fit it my self by the looks of it. all ill need to do is swap the cable activation to hydraulic to match the bell of the diesel gearbox. thinking of swapping internals of box to but prob a big job and may not solve my prob ? possibly the wrong gear ratio's ? try to keep it short next time !
