my point is to spend 25k on putting a chev in... when you could spend at extreme MAX 20k putting 4.2 diesel in and and decent t28 garret turbo or simular, working fuel pump 12mm bore, good front mount intercooler, good airbox and good bloody exhaust manifold, and decent radiator, WHY would you bother with chev.. the 4.2 will KILL it in every way possible. even reliabilty.. and in hot desert conditions. but ya right...... each to the own..
i hope it works out for ya

Re: 6.5 chev v8 diesel in to gu
I have some first hand experience with the 6.5 - Dad had a H1 Hummer with one in it.
It was OK, I guess. It certainly wasn't efficient - 16L/100km was about right for general use. With the factory 3" mandrel bent exhaust Hummers ran, it did make a nice (exhaust) noise, but it certainly was a loud motor, and not in a good way really, mostly in a rattly, idling-too-fast kind of way. It didn't break glowplugs or otherwise give any trouble, but it didn't set the world alight either.
Before anyone comments that in a H1 it's dragging some amazing amount of weight around - you're wrong. A H1 in the trim Dad had was under 3000kg. A laden Gu would easily be that heavy, and it's unlikely it would be running the 4L80E auto - the best thing about the driveline in the Hummer.
I really don't think there's any good reason to fit one to anything these days. There's plenty of Hummer owners pulling out the 6.5 and fitting a 4BT Cummins and claiming all manner of improvements, and they are hardly cutting edge either.
There's no way a 6.5 conversion would cost $25K though. I think HeathGU's Duramax conversion only owes him about that, and the Duramax is certainly worth putting in a GU.
Wambat - I'm not too fussed that you don't want to hear criticism of the idea. Just because a motor is free doesn't make it a good idea. I think you are also overstating the "low down torque" of the 6.5. Peak torque on a atmo 6.5 is nothing special - 380Nm. when added to 160 HP peak power and 3600rpm rev limit, really, all you are doing is moving the whole powerband downwards. That's not as much "better" as it is "different". THe 6.5 hand grenade It has about the same HP and marginally (10%) more torque than the 3.0 hand grenade you had in the car in the first place, and nearly 1000rpm less rev range.
Each to their own and all, but don't say we didn't warn you. I think the conversion will end up costing more than replacing the ZD30, selling the car, and buying a TD42T, even if the engine itself is free.
Steve.

Re: 6.5 chev v8 diesel in to gu
gwagen steve, the reason i dont want to hear criticism is as i have stated a couple of times, its not for me. i am NOT doing this conversion, i wanted to, but have already been talked out of it, most of the arguments i have read over the years have done that buy now.
the main reason is i know i cant talk my friend out of it, and i also cant be bothered giving him all the negative info.
when the post is about what i plan to do to my fourby, i love nothing more than criticism, as how else will i learn.
