Hey all
Just bought myself a new TD42T motor from nissan to go into my gq patrol. My main objective is longevity, 600K would be nice as I don’t have any intention of getting rid of it soon. I am also looking at putting a GT2860rs in and running it at about 10-12psi. (and yes I know I could puss it to 15-20psi and it would still last a long time but I am not really after power 90 –100rwkw would be a big improvement on what I have already.) I have heard that the fly wheels are different on the TD42 than the new TD42T and something about the hymonic balancer? I am also wondering what technics you guys have used to run them in and what type of oil used for that. Looking at running a top mount IC of which this and the patrol forum have a lot of information on but I am still keen to hear what other people have done (pic’s). I’m an apprentice and I am spending a lot of money on this patrol so I want to get it right the first time so if you can think of anything that would help put it down.

I run the gt28 on mine with a .6 housing, runs well no complaints, Spools around 1500rpm and reaches full boost around 1800-2000rpm. The bigger housing would be better if you want more top end power. As for the sound the whistle is noticeable through my snorkel but as for exhaust mine is quiet. I run a 3" system with a muffler and it is close to silent (exhaust wise). Mine makes around 100rwhp with a very safe tune that I can tow with and do whatever I want. My exhaust temp never sees over 450deg no matter what conditions it sees.
As for intercoolers if you are only running 10psi (which I do) you probably don't need it, however it won't do any harm if you want to spend the money.

its a great motor you have scored your self!
The TD42T factory differs from the normal TD42 and the post 95 TD42 by a few things but that's another story, as far as the fly wheel is concerned the crank shaft boss is larger with a different bolt PCD.
Harmonic balancer? not on the TD42T
Oil, I use 15w40 semi synthetic with no drama. (with lots of towing)
running in, dump the oil and filters after 1000k's and don't labour the engine for long periods. don't use synthetic oil for running in etc etc..... there is a topic on this somewhere?
water to air top mount intercooler, if you have the cash there is undoubtedly only one that stacks up with the numbers to prove it and that's the 'Lamonover' a guy on this site builds them matt mcinnes from memory, they are expensive but very good.
turbo, the GT2860r is a great size for the unmodified engine you have, if you can get away with it go 3" straight through for sound.
long life, service every 5000k's, use good filters, good oil, good radiator, clean fuel and you'll be laughing for another 500000k's

I am looking at just running a top mount air to air as it will be so much easier and problem free hopefully. I’ve heard that mufflers cut out most of the sound of gt28 that’s why I am intending to get the old muffler I have now and cut a 3” hole through it and stick a bit of 3” pipe through that. It will look good to the RTA and sound good to me. I am also looking at dumping it at the rear diff but I don’t think they like that. If anyone is looking at trying to buy a motor from nissan you will probable have to ring about 5 people before you’ll get someone that knows what a diesel motor is, you’ll then have to tell them that you motor is fuel injected and not carby (that’s after telling them is a diesel) after that they’ll tell you that you couldn’t possible know that a TD42T motor is stronger that a TD42 because I don’t work there and your not a mechanic and to top it off they’ll tell you they don’t make them any more and when they find out they do they say that will cost you $25k . Whatever you do DON’T tell nissan that your putting a Y61 motor into a Y60. After sometime I rang a nissan shop it Brisbane and they were very helpful and gave me a great price.
I would love to see and hear your truck one day garth that would be such a weapon 30psi!!! I saw the pic of your custom turbo manifold that things crazy.

I got it for $7,300 they gave it to me trade price it should have been $10,500
When you did your motor did you get custom pistons and rods made up also what type of power are you roughly getting out of it?

it has the 30mm standard pins for that motor in it.
I used after market 'ricon' (spelling) jap made pistons, then Teflon coated the skirts and ceramic coated the crowns, but you probably don't need that for yours.
The rods are standard other than crack testing and balancing, some were waaay out.
Getting about 200rwkw out of it on 33's. but its made to tow a big boat so to control the EGT's its defueled when doing the towing runs. A GT3065R would maybe be the better choice, I'm currently tossing up whether to go duramax or use this turbo on the next 'modded' TD42T build for a GU.
but for what your doing and unless you have cash to waste, go the 28 series and spend your time in it rather than under it!! ha ha

Don’t bother mate i have a series 3 landrover as well so I spend all my time under that . Man I wish I could build a car like that to tow my boat but I guess I need a boat first. 200rwkw that would be nuts do you drag all the young kid off at the lights, how do you like them diesel fumes!! Duramax would be mad, I would like try a 7.3 powerstroke but somehow I don’t think it would fit in a patrol. The other alternative would be a unimog with a powerstroke but I think I’ll save for a house instead. Man it nice to dream though.

Still working on putting a new td42t motor into my gq. I just noticed that I cant see an oil drain in the sump for the turbo. Is that where they drain out into on the td42t motors? I am just wondering If they gave me a td42 motor instead of a td42t. I thought there where a few ways of telling the difference between the motor from the out side dose anyone know what they where (size of the nut on the shaft?)???
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am a bit worried!!!

Sounds like you got a TD42.. $7300 is around the right price for a TD42. The TD42T should have a turbo hanging off the exhaust manifold.

As it's a new motor it does't have any manifolds on it what so ever. The engine number seems to be that of a td42t and i had a look at a few pics the otherday and i think the factory turbo dumps the oil back into the side of the motor. my td42 motor doesn't have this return but my td42t (the motor i am hopping is a td42t) does. so it should be good i am hopping
