100 series manual swap.

100 series manual swap.
What is the feasibility of swapping a manual gearbox into a 100 series?
It's a 1HD-FTE which currently has the 4 speed slushbox. Nothing wrong, it just isn't appreciated.

Re: 100 series manual swap.
Its no biggy
you will need driveshafts gearbox and crossmember also you will need to fab a new set of mounts on the chassis for the gearbox crosmember
you will also need clutch and bellhousing etc
i have 100 series 1HDFTE auto in my 80 series with a man box on the back runs fine

Re: 100 series manual swap.
So where do you find a donor vehicle and how do the gear ratios work out?
Re: 100 series manual swap.
this thread http://www.lcool.org/forum/viewtopic.ph ... ight=h151f has some good info in it, not all relevant to what you are looking at, but probably helpful anyway
I would think you would be able to find an imported 80series VX with factory turbo manual as a donor without too much trouble over there?
as far as ratios, 1st is a touch too high, and 5th is a touch too low, but nothing the 1HD-FTE wont cope with
I think all 100 series had the same diff ratio? 4.3:1

Re: 100 series manual swap.
the cheapest way would be to get a gearbox from a 105 series or 80 series petrol or TD you need diesel bell housing and td flywheel and clutch
you can use a na diesel box from an 80 series but not a 105 series as they downgraded the na 105 series box to the r series and run a custom clutch plate
the only thing i am not sure of is the shifter locations on the 80 series boxes compared to 100 series
clutch pedal
well have a look at the diferences between the 105 and 100 series heaps of 105 manuals in aus not sure about NZ but it would be a fairly small light thing to get shipped over
have fun looking for parts

Re: 100 series manual swap.
So what gearbox codes are we looking at?
I'm aware of the R gearboxes being too light, but we don't see many 105's here anyway. I've seen maybe 8 ever. 80 series manuals are still rare, but they do pop up for sale. Just need to find one that fell on it's roof I guess.
Is the HDJ79 any use for parts? Assuming we can find one being wrecked.
I'll sign up to lcool later on and have a look.

Hdj 79 is good for everything except crossmember ,clutch pedal and shifterKiwiBacon wrote:So what gearbox codes are we looking at?

so flywheel clutch and box with transfer are all good from one of them only thing to remember is you will lose full time 4x4 and if you put free wheel hubs on your abs will fail
80 series or 105 series petrol or td are the H series gearbox (same as in factory 100 td) and if you get a full time one you have none of those abs or full time issues

Re: 100 series manual swap.
Ah right, so the transfer stays with the gearbox?
So gearbox/transfer etc from a petrol combined with the bellhousing/clutch from any 1HD or 1HZ cruiser will work? (plus a dozen other little bits).

Re: 100 series manual swap.
petrol box is the same as td box from 1HD Ie same ratio's same input splineKiwiBacon wrote:Ah right, so the transfer stays with the gearbox?

1hz 80series box is still as strong etc has different first gear ratio slightly lower and different input spline(hence custom clutch needed to run big TD/petrol clutch with different spline on input shaft)
1Hd bellhousing is the same as 1hz bellhousing
you will need a TD flywheel as they are different to the na, the clutch is bigger

Re: 100 series manual swap.
DO NOT FIT A HZJ105 SERIES GEARBOX- I cannot stress this enough! The R151F gearbox in the 105 series is also fitted to the Prado, Hilux and Surf 3.0TD's, and those 3.0L motors can pop the R151F without too much hassle- I ripped the input shaft apart on one with 100kw/300nM in my 3.0TD in FIFTH, the 1HD-FTE's 151kw/430nM would lunch one in a very short time.
The gearbox your chasing is a H150F- Used in the 100 series manual TD's and 70 series TD's.
And the manual 100 series are bloody rare- I just picked up an 05, and it took me a while to find one with a cogbox rather than slushbox.

Re: 100 series manual swap.
Cheers Ferrit. I'm already weary of the R150 series box. Good for a car, but not for a heavy 4wd with a torquey diesel.
This swap will probably only happen if we stumble across the right parts for the right price. It's not a priority but would be a nice improvement.

Re: 100 series manual swap.
The R150 is a lot stronger than the R151, but still neither of them are on par with the H series gearboxes.
The H boxes dont have anywhere near as nice a shift feel as the R boxes though- thats teh downside of moving much larger pieces of metal around

Re: 100 series manual swap.
The gearbox x member is in a different spot on the chassis, manual to auto, so may require some work to be done to get it to fit.
Making some nice changes to the 4 sp will make it a nicer vehicle to drive, for less money, and save a conversion.

Re: 100 series manual swap.
Just be careful as the gear lever location on the gearbox is different between models, and I think the HDJ79 will be too far forward for a bucket seat GXL.thrashlux wrote: Hdj 79 is good for everything except crossmember ,clutch pedal and shifter
