Make an 80 go quicker??

Post by McLarryBob »

Hey i have recently bought a 1991 1HD 80 series with 320,000kms and I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks to make it run a bit quicker. I have changed all the filters and oils already.

turbo, change diff ratio, change gearing in gearbox, aftermarket camshafts, bigger injectors.

All these things plus many more can get you moving quicker. Some good info to add would be what you plan to do with car ie just a tow vehicle, purely offroad, both on and offroad.

And how much dollars you looking at spending

probably your best bet would be a 3" straight through exhaust it got my brothers 2.8L rocky turbo diesel moving heaps better. Same size would apply to yours even being a bigger engine as im assuming it not turbo'd

1HD- factory turbo ??

if so, 3" exhaust from turbo back with full flow muffler would be 1st on the list, add a boost controller so waste gate is operating at 14psi, then get the pump and the injectors done and get it tuned for performance, add an intercooler. All this should get it cracking nicely

If you are greedy for more, look at getting a suitable aftermarket ballbearing turbo and repeat the tuning proccess

http://www.lcool.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; tech section has a nice write up for factory turbo pump mods, if it has a good exhaust, add intercooler, follow the tech sheet, add 3/4 turn to main fuel, if its in std spot, and you should be more than happy.

If its a 1 HZZZzzzzzzzzzz, bolt on turbo is best bang for buck.

x3. Though if money is tight i'd go for the inectors first, then pump, then other mods. Injection spray pattern on a direct injection motor is important for power and economy and they don't always get done per the service schedule. It's not hard to turn up the fuel to compensate for the go-faster mods, so you don't really save any by having the injection parts rebuilt and tuned last.

If it's a manual, then one of the biggest performance hit is the low first and second gearing. This is where the autos shine, they get up and going alot easier. Bigger tyres help get it rolling quicker, but still since it's a new truck i'd focus on getting it performing the way it did when it rolled out of the factory. at 320k kilometers it's no spring chicken
