Fuel Issue?

Post by Jonezy01 »

Lately (last 6 months) i've noticed my fuel enconomy slowly geting worse and worse, and havent been able to figure out why, then the other day sitting at the traffic lights it was idleing perticularly high can't tell you how high as it has no tacho but about twice as high as normal, then at the next set of lights it was still doing it then the next it was back to normal. I have taken a notice the last week or so and its doing it about 3 out 5 times. It's on a 92 triton 2.6

Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

I thought maybe the automatic choke could be sticking or something, would explain why the fuel econ is bad, if its stuck on when im crusing down the high way/around town ect...

Any other ideas? Is there any reason why i couldnt delete the auto choke all together (removing the little butterfly thing on the carby (under the air cleaner)) for a few days to see if fixes it?

My vote for the auto choke as well, that is if it's not going up and down randomly. I disconnected mine when i had my scorpion as it would sit on 2000rpm for ages. I eventually changed the pot thingy with another one.
Also if your thermostat hasn't been changed in a long time - might be pertinent to change it?
check your accelerator cable as well. Actually I suggest to do this first!

Check the water pipes going to the auto choke housing are not blocked internally, this often happens.
Also the wax pellet in the choke wears and you have to adjust it (if there is any adjustment left!!)
Make sure you have a thermostat fitted, so that the a/choke comes off fully.

Also next time the revs are sticking, leave the engine on and pull the air filter off and prod a thin screw driver down the
secondary throttle to make sure it is not sticking- If it is (it is common) the secondary diaphragm more the likely is shot and needs replacing.

If you have any problems checking these things PM me your number and i will help you out if I can.

Cheers Louie.
