early and late 2h info please

Post by Rangie ute on 38'' »

hi i am in need of a 2h head for my 88 hj75, i have a mate with a 2h engine out of a 82 cruiser. Can any one tell me if the head would suit my later model engine as i believe the early model engines are wet liner blocks n the late are 1 piece, so are there any difference in the heads,
also are there any other fundermental differnces between the two, which would stop me from building the engine and putting the complete engine in my ute later on

thanks

the heads are the same, the only real difference is the early 2hs had cast iron piston ring retainers and the later ones didnt, which meant the later ones risgs flogged out the piston ring grooves until they move that much they bust and then you drop a cylinder. so early 2h pistons are better to use. hope this helps

There are other differences too, like the oil cooler housing is not interchangeable.

I learnt this the hard way, mine coroded out, came home with a goodish one from wreckers and it didnt bolt up :agrue:

Another 2 weeks chasing down a late version oil cooler housing.
