no different crank different pistons different size...... on the outside they are very close. They have the same mounting holes and the sierra trans will bolt up.

it will bolt up and fit but as soon as you turn it over it will bend every valve in the head. No clearance and the wrong pistons for a 16valve head. They will work the other way around. A carby head will go on a 16v block but a 16v head will not work on a 8valve block.
If you know where to look you can pick up a complete GTI engine with all the trimmings for $600. But honestly if you going to put money into going EFI just put out and get a vitara or balino 1.6 if you don't you will be kicking your self later.

Rather have me a easily modifyable GTi motor than a 1.6 personally, I'm not kicking myself. So think about it. You have had to modify your dinosaur twin cam motor just to get to what you could of had without modification by going with a 1.6 from the start? So you would take peaky revs over a more torque? I will not argue with you over the GTI being better then any of the carbys out there. The only 2 advantages of puting a GTI in over a 1.6 is you don't need a mod plate in NSW (not sure about other states) and 2 they are cheap.

You can make the motor mount bracket in about 5 mins out of a a peace of 25/50 blue metal, you can weld on new studs onto the outter edge of your sierra box. it costs about $10 on a bad day.

yes you need an adaptor plate to mount the G16 to a sierra box, the adaptor kit (if you bought one) would cost $200 that also includes the engine mount also.
As for 1.3 twin cam vs 1.6 its more of a person choice as bot engines have roughly the same power output but the 1.3's power is higher up in the revs.

People that don't know how to do it without a plate you will. Its simple to do it without a plate. all the plate does is moves the outer bell housing bolts out about 2cm on each side. If you get 2 studs and weld them to the side of the bell housing of the trans it works and it cost next to nothing. Its what my old set up was and its the set up that I just put into Zooktastics sierra 4 weeks ago.
What do you think they did back in the day before some one came up with the plate idea? And another small thing but this may just be the luck of the draw Every sierra that I have been around that uses the plate burns up clutches quicker then if you mount the box the way I just said. The adapter plate is a few mm thicker then the standard plate.

The level of modification in my GTi motor is an aftermarket coil (needed replacing and cost the same), some eagle leads, and a unifilter. It has more than enough power offroad and does the maximum QLD speed limit just fine.V.W.Dave wrote:

The GTi motor has more torque than the stock sierra motor everywhere in the rev range, and like I said if you want more than power and torque than a 1.6 you don't have to spend much, or just buy a modded motor already for bugger all $$$.
I like the 1.6L motor, but I just prefer the GTi, and would do the conversion on another zook if I got the chance.
Interestingly one of my friends MK2 GTi swifts has about 375000km's on it and it's still going strong and has never been pulled down. This thing is cammed up and sees 8000rpm regularly and pulls like a 13 year old boy in such a light car. That is reliablity that I rate higher than power and torque in an offroad situation, and I've heard plenty of 1.6L head warping horror stories.
In the end of the day I have a 525hp VN commodore for when I want power, my point is the GTi has enough. It's hard enough owning 2 modified cars without having to worry about the motor in both.
