V8 Patrol fuel consumption
V8 Patrol fuel consumption
I am considering going either a efi 5ltr holden or 6ltr ls2 chev into my gq. Anyone got 1 of these in there patrol just want to know what the fuel consumption is like & are you happy with it. I'll be running 35's everyday & 4.11:1 atm but may change them to 4.6's in the future.

Re: V8 Patrol fuel consumption
Dont waste your time with the 5 litre. Not enough grunt, which will result in poor economy. You will be disappointed.
Havent got one personally, but heard a lot of good things about the LS2.

Re: V8 Patrol fuel consumption
sorry to side track ya post but went for a squirt in a 6speed ls2 today, jesus there got some balls, compared to the 5litre and the 5.7, eats them for breaky with toast and a cuppa. go the ls2 if you can afford one.
Re: V8 Patrol fuel consumption
Well i'll put it out there that i've got a 5 litre in a gq ute and am happy with it. Don't know about economy except i drove to Landcruiser Park did some tracks and drove home on a standard fuel tank. Mine was running 3.9 ratio which made it a bit low on power taking off but still drove Hilux Hill, Club rally etc choosing all hard lines. I know everyone on here bags the 5 Litre and sure they aren't up there with the power of the 6 litres but the price of them isn't that high either.
If a 5 Litre is what you can afford get it in the engine bay and enjoy.
Okay guys now you can all rip me apart...

Re: V8 Patrol fuel consumption
i was going to do a v8 conversion on mine and was able to get lucky anough to drive a few first i would not go with the 5ltr for all the work involved it was just not worth it in my eyes. i have decided to go turbo diesel but if i was to go v8 i would deffently go ls. All the best wich ever way you decide to go.
Re: V8 Patrol fuel consumption
I've run a few tanks through my GU 6l and am getting around 15-16l per 100km, mix of town / highway driving.
Out bush its around 20l per 100km

ls1 5.7L 30km per litre on a good day and 40+ on a bad day.
Edit: "Typo" should read 30L per 100km on a good day and 40+ on a bad day,

Re: V8 Patrol fuel consumption
everyone cans 5L's but as said they are next to bullet proof and have lasted a long time.
the ls series engines are good but not reliable like a 5l is. plus the conversion cost of an ls1 engine is pretty high plus the fact if you want to run gas u need direct injection to do it properly where as the 5l can run on the cheaper old style.
both have plus's and negatives. personally i put a 350 chev in mine earlier iron block stroked to 383 and i used a cast iron dart heads. alloy heads scare me being a 4wd cause if it gets really hot the chances of an alloy head loosing a gasket compared to cast iron is really high.
i think a 4wd is better off being reliaable as to some real high power animal that overheats and is a worry to take out in the middle of anywhere.
my 2cents worth take it how you want just an opinion.

Re: V8 Patrol fuel consumption
im running a 5.0L stroker (355ci) running a mild cam and I just come back from a trip to snow. Got around 26L/100 on LPG. Might seem a bit thirsty but I have the LPG tuned rich and the thing will comfortably accelerate up most hills. That economy was based on me sitting on 110-115km/h.
If I dropped below 100 im sure it would be better. I too like the simplicity of the 5.0L for a 4wd. Mine has more than enough torque.

Re: V8 Patrol fuel consumption
Maybe in living in the past, but i have a good old fasioned cast iron 350 chev worked for straight gas in my GQ.
she goes like the clappers, great torque, 150 kw on 35s (Dynoed) arsome acceleration.
Easy simple coversion, no electronics, HEI dizzy very reliable.
25-30 litres per 100.
Grant.
