Add me to the nearly lost rear wheel group

Post by BundyRumandCoke »

05 GU wagon, running factory 17 inch alloys, 208000km on the clock. Driving home last Friday night, and I took a small detour onto a dirt road I havent been on before. Hit a washout at speed, which shook things up pretty well, but I didnt think any more of it.
Yesterday, I happened to notice something strange with my right rear wheel. I checked and saw I was missing one wheel nut, the stud had sheared off cleanly. It was a new break as no corrosion had set in across the break. My guess is it happened when I hit the washout.
Went to Nissan today, and bought 6 new studs, and one wheel nut. I decided to replace all the studs on that wheel as some others may hve become fatigued. Studs $13.66 each + GST, Wheel nut, $4.50 + GST. I have kept the other 5 studs for spares for my (hopefully) Cape York trip next year.
I am glad I caught it at this stage. I questioned the spare parts bloke about breaking studs being a known issue with GUs. His response was it is, if they are not correctly tensioned. Pity they dont supply a tension wrench in the tool kit of Patrols.

I completely lost my wheel on my old GQ ute at cruiser park one year. Just coming out of a corner at about 70 kph then bang, arse end fell to one side and we were sideways all over the road, when we finally came to a stop i turned to my mate and said " What the f*#k happened then" as i finished the sentence the wheel went flying past us and down into the bush.

I was running 3" alloy wheel spacers at the time.

the wheel wrench that comes with most cars is intentionally about a foot long. That's so the average force a person can exert down on it is around the 90 foot pounds most studs are rated at.

The problem is tyre places and workshops using the rattle gun to do up nuts.
The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
