I have a 73 Rangie, it has maxi lockers and axles. and runs 35's. I break Cv's pretty regularly. My question is were can i get some that dont break?

Cheap method: Early County 110's. Very hard to guage and a few different factors change it, but is very roughly is in the same strength and size range as that of the Patrol GQ. They can withstand locked 35's reasonable well.

The strongest landie CVs are those in the 101 but unfortunately they do not fit in any other landie except a series 1 tonner.

aeu2522's which are the 110 county type are no longer available as OEM...and the aftermarket replacement ones are pretty average.
some will mention Rovertracks CV and Axle shaft kit, but this wont work for you as you have the MD up front. Barry from Hi-tough Eng. can supply you with some or you can get the ashcroft aeu2522 replacement....thats about your best option....
are you breaking cv's or the stub shaft??? are they still the r06665??? range rover 2 piece cv?

If you are breaking them regularly, then I'd also be looking at Ashcroft CV's with Hi-tough axles which take the MD locking dog.

Just finished this conversion to Manny's old bobtailed 2 door Winch Truck. And auto and lt230 transfer. Got Ashcrofts direct from UK cheaper than local. Last trip out, Broke a rear Maxi axle - but not a front cv. Got awesome deal on full new set of MD splined Hi Tough Axles from Barry and I now got a full set of spares........Still got the old 35" Simex....Well worth the effort. You will need to machine out the inside of your stub a little to let the cv's fit, either ashcrofts or AEU2522's. Cheers Dan

I checked out these aeu2522 on Ashcrofts site. These have the axle shaft attached to the CV, Do these work in mine as my CVs are seperate to the outer axle stub..

Yes, the AEU2522 fit. Need a bronze bush that fits in the spindle and a drive flange. Maxi-drive used to make the kit to fit AEU2522's, so Barry at HTE, probably does them now.

I had 2 peice and broke stub shafts and cv's randomly.
Barry does a kit for the conversion, though you will have to modify the stub hub to clear the lip on the new 2522's and fit the new brass bush(just like later rover stubs with the bearings). About 10 mm and 2 mins in a lathe.
Kit and axles are also available though MR Automotive - if you prefer.

The other thing MD and Hy-tuf talk about is the heat treatment being a significant factor. I know that when Mal showed me the range which he could get his axles treated to it was in the lower end as to get them more ductile (think thats it???)
so they dont produce great numbers but will take a beating....Mal never set out to build a comp axle or something for 35's ect just built a better rover axle...testiment to his design and standards that they have done so well.

For what it is worth IMHO, Hy-tuf is a better technical (not considering $$$) choice than EN26 (McNamara axles), which is better again than 4340 for axles that will have to take a flogging. Ultimate strength during a one cycle test is only one factor to consider.
Hy-tuf is for components subjected to impact/shock at high stress, where 4340 is for components subjected to high stress with less impact/shock.
I know of early maxi-drive axles that have failed, they were most likely from before Mal changed material to Hy-tuf.
Material data sheets give minimum values, assuming Mal used the minimum value, then statistically a tested axle would would most likely fail at a higher value than calculated. BTW the data sheets from the Australian manufacturer of Hy-tuf give superior property values to those I have seen listed in other material manuals.

and I wasnt saying that Ashcroft were bad at all, they are making some great stuff now, and gave us a cromo cv option...
agreed also that Jac mac and rover tracks also doing very good stuff.

I've had 10 spline hituff axles in my disco for a few months now, i pulled them out the other day and both were slightly twisted at the splines, and both splines are damaged as well.
this is only running 33's, rear locker and a tired old 200tdi
Not real happy with them but i spose thats what you get for running 10spline gear maybe?
