60 series rear hub

Post by brentz »

hey guys i have recently in the last 2 to 3 months sheared the studs outta the rear hubs on my 60 causing the axle to pop out and there for no rear wheel drive
the first one happened ages ago got aanother hub fitted up all sweet then the 2nd one just last weekend so done the same but now ive changed both sides and makes me wonder why it did it? i run 35"s and i no its extra strain is there any solution to making it stronger?
me and my dad were talking about it maybe getting the hub drilled out so i can fit bigger studs for the axle in less chance of breakage?

any suggestions as dont want this to keep happenenin i no its the result of bigger tyres but yer

Do you have an auto locker in the rear? I hear they can make the issue worse. Are you reguarly checking the tension on the studs? Wheel bearings in good condition?

Upgrading the studs has been done plenty of times in the past mate. Two ways that I have seen it done is to use the 10mm studs off a 100 series or use 3/8 bolts high tensile bolts. I ended up doing the 3/8 bolts first, without a problem and then went to 3/8 cap screws because they are stronger again/can be tightened more.

edit: I think hulsty used caps screws to replace the standard studs, which is another option.

Yeah mate, I just did it carefully with a cordless drill, but thats rough. It would be best with a drill press. I did just drill the axle holes out to 3/8th, if you go with the 10mm studs and use the cone washers then you will need to machine out the axle for the bigger cone washer aswell.
