K&N cold air intakes
hey guys
im looking to a solution to my problem, i have a 4.2 fuel injected GQ, running on gas and petrol, have recently blown the airbox up, and am looking into replacing it with a K&N apollo cold air intake.
just seeing if anyone has had any experience with these and what they are like.
any help appreciated.

If you keep blowing up your airbox (backfire from LPG?), then putting a flash air filter on it isn't going to improve things. You need to solve the backfiring problem first, most likely due to a vacuum leak or similar.

I've fixed the backfiring problem. It's the only box I can find that's going to work, virtually impossible to find a standard one. Yeah do alot of fourbying.

Have you got a pic you can post up? I'm not a huge fan of the foam type filters (i like paper), not after seeing the data that Damkia has anyway. For onroad they're ok, for offroad they're bloody terrible.

Have you got a picture of your engine bay you can post up? Just so we've got an idea of how much/little space you've got.

ill have to get one on the weekend. i have dual battery system. id have maybe 250mm by 250mm area to work in roughly.

dont know, was in it when i got it. fits a full size truck battery easy with a bit of room each side of the battery.

Maybe try one of these, they come in different intake sizes and I'm currently fitting one up to my Patrol

As with most things - there's always a compromise. Using one of those NPOWER units on you truck might make it fully hectic, but will be a PITA for maintenance, and at the end of the day is no better than a brand name foam filter.
Have a look at all of the vehicles racing in the off-road racing series - you'll find most of them are running big Donaldson systems with paper elements (big $$$). These things require maximum air flow under the harshest conditions in the country, and also have to provide clean air reliably. Thats the compromise.

Oh your definetly right mate. I'm not after the most fancy airbox, I just want a airtight box with a filter, that can go between my snorkel and air flow metre. And the k&n one seems to be the cheapest/only option to suit me.

Is there enough room to fit something like the ZD30 GU airbox?
Another thing you can do is have a search for GQ specific airbox tech on here - i know its been covered at least a dozen times in detail, from high HP V8's through to 200+ rwkw TD42's (diesels suck more air than petrols). There were some good suggestions like Donaldson's, Tommahawk Racefab etc. Its worth having a search nonetheless.

as said above k&n are not he greatest in dust
Donaldson do very good filter housings & filters. It just takes some effort to fit to the car.
I maybe wrong, but I think they do 'powercore' filters/elements for the cyclone style/shape housings now as well (probably a bit easier to fit).

I don't know what you guys are doing but in seven years of runnig with a K&N i have never had a problem with dust going through it.
But it is personal prefrence, mine is alwas oiled when i wash it I reoil it so it looks like it came out of the box like a new one.

Have you looked at VL turbo box, they are smallish, and it would flow more Air than a 4.2 would need

thanks for all the suggestions guys. ive tried the VN commodore airbox, but was just such a muck around, and still didnt seem very watertight, and i dont have any flat surface to mount it on. i think ill still end up with the k&n, i know one of my mates hasnt had any problems with it, as long as it is well oiled as red dog mentioned. Thanks for all the info and suggestions guys
