Busted something???

Post by JAFO74 »

A mate of mine has recently purchased a modified TJ, we were out the other day having a play when I noticed that when his rear air locker was in there seems to be a fair clunking and obvious movement (clunk I suppose) when driving. Now if it was my GQ and in the front I would bet on a busted CV, have done a few. I am leaning towards crown wheel maybe but as I don't know anything about Jeeps I was hoping for some input, or is this a normal thing for the jeeps with air lockers to do? Thanks in advance Jafo74

Hey mate, ill start with the clunk is not normal, my tj is air locked front and rear and doesn't make a sound. The clunk could be a few things, is it a constant clunk or does it speed up with wheel speed? Does it clunk in 2wd, does it clunk with locker off? It could be a tooth off the ring gear/crown but i have never been in a 4wd with one damaged so im not real sure what it'll sound like, sorry i cant be more helpfull

I only noticed the clunk at low speed when he was trying to crawl up a slippery enbackment, it only seems to be with the locker in but that would make sense as then there is pressure on the crown wheel otherwise when open I dont think that it would be as noticable. That's why I'm with you I think that has a broken tooth either on the crown wheel or pinion. This thing seems to have been given a hard life and more little problem are evolving every trip....

Yea righto, what ratio diff gears has it got? My money is on crown teeth rather then pinion teeth, as pinion teeth are usually pretty thick. Maybe drain the oil, and just pop the the front cover off and have a look, does the knock happen when in reverse too? Try checkin both sides of the crown gear. good luck :) :)

thanks so called awesum1. if you were able to read properly you would have noticed that it is not my car other yes I would have just pulled it apart to have a look, also you might have noticed that I said I didn't know anything about Jeeps so I was doing whats called research so that I could address the problem informed rather than pull something apart that is not mine without knowing if the sound was normal. But hey you are probably one of those people who has a shed full of stuff that they cant find a problem with and have no idea about how to put it back together. If you have nothing better to do with your time than being annoying on a helpful site then maybe you should keep looking at your porn and leave the rest of us alone!!! :fist: :fist: :fist: :fist: :fist: :finger: :finger: :finger: :finger: :finger:
