UHF External speaker - can you make one with an old speaker?
As the title suggests, I have a UHF that I want to hide somewhere safely in my truck, and use an external speaker so I can hear it.
There's one here on ebay at the momnet:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GME-external-UHF ... 19bfa33caf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
but rather than drop $50 on buying one, can I just use an old 4" car speaker that I have lying around, splice in the correct plug and I'm away, or is it more difficult than that?

Re: UHF External speaker - can you make one with an old spea
It will work, you just need to match the impedence of the 4" speaker to that of the GME. I just had a look on the GME website and they appear to all be 4ohm, meaning your 4" speaker will need to be 4ohm as well. It should be as most car speakers i have delt with are 4ohm but if its OEM just check to be sure.
If you use the wrong speaker you could blow up the amplifier inyour UHF and that will probably end up costing more than $50 to fix.

Thanks mate.
I didn't even think of that. I'll check the numbers before I plug things into things

If the impedance is higher, no worries. If its lower, you could be in a whole world of trouble though...De-lux wrote:Thanks mate.

I look at doing the same thing except with a slightly smaller speaker. When I went down to Jaycar to get the bits to do it, they had small speakers for about $12 that plug in using a headphone jack. The one I got was about 50x50mm and is fairly loud. Just a thought and it will be a lot easier then trying to wire up a new speaker.

Didn't think of Jaycar.
Found this for $25 - http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=AS3182" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Thanks team OL

I thought the external speaker is only $20 - $25 at Supercheap for a UHF.
Why make one?

I used a speaker from an old car phone kit, worked perfectly. You can also buy an extension lead with a type of base plate on it so you could even unplug your mic and only having the plug showing on the dash.
A speed camera would have prevented that!

i did the Jaycar also. Remote mounted the speaker in a dash pod. UHF is located in the dash.
