Hey, Looking at tuning my 4y carbi or possibly replacing it . I've hear the XE-XF carbi's can be converted onto them and have seen the conversion kits on Ebay. Now my question; is there any use in tuning the stock carbi vs replacing it with a new one/XE-XF second hander when given that i want to replace the 4y in about 6 months with a 3rz? I drive about 100k's a day during the week and about 400k's on the weekend so the more fuel i save the better !!!!!!

so not going to tune the stock carb but replace it with the 32/36 weber conversion kit off ebay, has anyone had any experience with these on the hilux 4wds, have seen a few posts for other cars but more looking at how it'll operate in 4wd situations any tips and advice on this would be much appreciated!
And also looking at dual fuel tanks and electric fuel pump. Guy at work reckons he "bilged" two tanks in his old hilux by connected them both down the bottom to create one big tank then to a fuel pump. Not sure exactly how this would work and if it'd be safe to pull an old tank out of a lux, any tips and ideas?

I had a 32/36 fitted to my Daihatsu rocky 3Y , improved on road performance but off road on steep inclines it tended to starve or flood with fuel. There is a modification for this but I have never tried it.
If you do get the weber make sure it has a electric choke fitted and possibly a solinoid fuel fuel cut out fitted to stop run-on.
The jetts fitted were 135 primary and 140 secondary for standard unleaded fuel.

cheers wide boy, do you know what the mod to the carb was to avoid starving or flooding? i'm guessing something to do with the float bowl ? so far its between this weber carb and an efi conversion, but i prefer to keep my shit simple so carbi FTW - what kind of power/fuel consumption gains did you get out of it ? so far i've heard figures of up to 30% extra power and 20% better fuel economy but im assuming thats over a really shagged stock carbi- which mine seems to be !

Whats wrong with your stock carby? I really think you're wasting your time and money converting to another carb if you are intending on a 3RZ swap in 6 months. Without knowing your complaint, it might just need a clean out and adjustment.

I saw the weber modificaton a zuzuki 4x4 website,guy was fitting it to a corolla motor , didn't check fuel consumtion figures but there was a small improvement. I fitted the weber for long distance touring but put the old nikki carb back on for local comuting as the weber didn't suit the rocky's emmision control system.You will only get noticable power gains with a combination of carb/freeflowing exhaust system,I never did a before/after measurement but ther was a noticable improvement.

Yeah its got a set of try y headers and 2.5" free flow exhaust, I'm finding fuel consumption at the moment is pretty heavy and throttle response is pretty sluggish even for a push rod engine. I spoke to one of the conversion kit and carb suppliers and apparently you can get a different set of jets and float to counteract the starve/flood problem. And to also answer the question of why the weber before 3rz, it sounds like tge 3rz is going to be pretty extra atm 5k all up? So I was going to try the weber carb and possibly a cam and see how that goes in the mean time.

I had a 3Y with a rebuilt stock carby. Had no dramas with it what so ever. Told the carby mob (Northside Carbies) that it was for compition style, hills, side slopes etc. Never let me down once.

how did it go after the rebuild compared to before and how much did it cost to get that done? is the 3y carb similar or same to the 4y ?

Didn't go at all really before carby rebuild. Could hardly get it on the car trailer. Was a few hundred but I would be guessing as it was about 6 or 7 years ago. Should be very close to the same carby. Just ask a few carby shops for quotes.

Well took her out on the weekend and now she won't hold idle, when this used to happen I found it was a vacuum line but they all appear ok, any tips or ideas on what to start on?

Anyone? Kinda sucks having the manual choke on atm for an idle and doesn't't always work. Would it be anything to do with the idle adjustment? Haven't touched it yet as I don't know which screw it is :/

Mate i have the 3y 2.0 running extractors and 2 1/4 sports system in my 4runner also running a 32/36 weber carb. i just got one from the wreckers of a early model cortina (4cy te-tf) and got it rebuild from sprints carby and tune (SA) stock jets and bought a redline adaptor plate everything bolted straight on apart from a little mod with the linkage set up and runs quite well and when you put the petal to the metal and the secondaries kick in she goes like a rocket.
the stock carb was a piece of crap and to much tempermental componets.
to stop the pre igniton (from memory as the car is outside) set the timing 8-9 degrees BTC and ran a high octane fuel.
easy solved.
and for the aircleaner i used a xf set up and just cut the base to shape the 32/36 weber and it's great for my custom snorkel set up too

hey mate sounds good, i was looking at the weber conversion kit from recarb but at $600 it has been delayed for a while, would be very interested in photos for the aircleaner/custom snorkel set up.
how much did you end up paying for the entire thing with tuning n all?
