What to do?

Post by Evski »

So a mate and I have just picked up a cheap 4Runner to use as a parts vehicle. He needs the front diff, and I'm taking the rear end for a coil conversion on my HiLux, IFS steering box for Highsteer, and the fuel tank/pump for a possible engine conversion down the track.

What I was wondering is if anyone has put the 3.0L V6 3vz engine into an LN106 HiLux with the auto and a gear driven transfer case. I know these engines have a bad rep, but this one starts and drives really well. The owner has receipts for $2000 worth of work done on the heads/timing belt/water pump. The vehicle also has just 180, 000kms on the clock so the gearbox should be sweet. There werent any leaks, and the owner said he had no problems with the vehicle mechanically after pumping $2000 into it which I would believe.

Would it be a worthwhile swap or should I just sell this gear and use the money for a turbo install or 3RZ swap? What would be involved in doing this engine swap into my HiLux?

Also I have been reading up on the coil conversion, and know it has been covered before, but does anyone have a good link to an install? I'd love to see something more step-by-step if it exists.

Cheers
Evan

Do a search on the coil conversion as I have put heaps of info on here a while back, there should be 2 different threads that I am aware of.

Other wise I can help you out with pics and info later.
Should be relevant, mine is the same model.

Yeah mate I've spoken to you before about it a while back. I had to bail on the conversion but I'm set to go this time around. Expect a few PM's as our lux's are pretty much identical down to the colour. Well, except yours is much better haha.

Whats the verdict on the 3.0L V6 conversion?

No worries, the coil conversion is one of the few things I have done that I took pics the whole way through, so should be able to help.

3.0l v6 isn't a bad motor, just thirsty for its power output.

My old one went pretty well with extractors, high flow exhaust, and intake mods with a K&N filter.

Should fit in easy enough with custom/modding engine mounts and gearbox mounts (box and xfer will move forward around 30-40mm). You'll need to mod your handbrake setup (where it comes out of the firewall) or fit the 4runner one.

Handbrake mods arent an issue as I will have to use the 4Runner set-up with the coil conversion. I might even see if I can run seperate controls to each wheel for a DIY cutting brake set-up.

I was hoping it wouldnt require engine mount mods though, as with that amount of effort it makes more sence to go with a 3RZ conversion. Not that I'm worried about moving the mounts, but if I'm going to the effort I may as well put in an engine which has proven to be reliable. the 3VZ seems to be held in the same regard as Nissans ZD30, and you dont hear of people transplanting those engines into GQ Patrols now do you? Shame, as this one seems to be in really good nick.

Thanks for all the replies though fellas!
