Loving this thread. I cant weld to save my life but im dying to learn how to though.

I have looked at tafe courses but the only one i can find is at ultimo tafe and i live at penrith which is about a hour travel time, add in rotational shift work it can be hard to get there.

Does anyone know where i can go to learn to weld in western sydney? as i learn better when someone shows me and then i give it a go.

Approach some shops and ask. At worst you'll be told no.

I did my welding courses at chullora tafe. pretty sure wetherill park has it aswell. but there would have to be tafes closer that offer it. Give one a call.

i arc welded some post for the old man a few yrs back to hold up the veranda out the back ill get some pic s and post em soon

Not arc but this is a 500mm overhead flux cored mig weld i did on a dump truck at work. 25mm plate on the bumper and the plate i welded on was 12mm. the vertical up was done by a boily..... i had to gouge it out then reweld (after this photo) and he was asked to leave.



this was the second time i had welded with flux core, the first time was a shitty 120 amp hobby mig with spartacus off the forum a few years ago. this weld was using a 500amp generator welder with a lincoln "briefcase" wire feeder.

Im pretty impressed with it.

These are done with a caddy welder and 2.5mm low hydrogen stick electrodes... (average photos but all i have)

I know they are not as flash as the above welds but these types of welds have been holding my steering box on and coil rear end in for about the last 3.5 years..
Much better then the birdshit toyota called welds..

Thats downhand fillet weld and overhead in position on 4 runner cross members..





But i dont claim to be a expert at welding either

I'm definately no expert either but I did my passenger side slider with my old stick welder. Sorry these pics are all post painting and as it sits on the 40 (dirty/dusty). I just recently bought a mig and will be making the drivers side slider with it so will upload some unpainted pics of that when I get around to it.

Here are some of my carpenters welds.


this was my first welder, mars 180(chinese cheapy), gasless MIG. Then it stopped making fire so I bought a decent dc inverter welder

can't really see the welds, but my attempt at stick welding

And one of my first attempts at TIG , prety ugly, but I was building it up to seal it.

Greg's & Harbs comments were aimed at this supposed tradies vertical welds on a dump truck & the standards for stress load welding.

Mark, I am currently do a Post trade course in Welding + Fab at Mt.druitt Tafe.
It runs for 2 years, 2 nights a week and is quite in depth.
You cover all welding + Thermal cutting techniques and is a great course.

At the end I am doing going to do the AS course for TIG welding, But is upto the student what they want to do.

If interested the course number is -9035

I'm only a TA and can do better than that.

Haven't attempted a vertical up for about 6 months, thought i'd give it a shot after reading this thread

Not bad, but it is alot harder on thin gauge material stuck up under a truck then two bits of thick plate on a workbench...

Not having a go, my welds arnt perfect (far from it)

Better quality welds have alot to do with preparation, nice clean steel, warm dry rods and warm steel makes for a better quality weld...
