Fj55 steering box

Post by Goanna_fj55 »

Hey all, I'm new here. I am trying to find a reconditioned or good second hand steering box for an early model fj55 and am having some difficulty.
Is there much difference between this steering box and the fj40/45 boxes at all as i know where i can get one.
Any help will be much appreciated.

The early model fj40/45 are not the same....i think after 1972 theres not much difference between them just the power steer box is 1" longer :?

so would there be much involved in modifying or combining different parts from other models to replace the current steering box? I have had no luck in even finding a second hand one.

So you are looking for a second hand one or a recon one (presumably sitting on a shelf somewhere). As you've found, slim pickings. Have you considered getting yours reconditioned? Just means it will be off the road a couple of days. Or is yours beyond repair?

40 series, FJ55 and early hilux steering boxes are all very similar, but the mounting flanges are on different angles. It would mean a bif of fabbing to get a 40 or hilux box to fit. I originally purchased a hilux PS box to fit to my FJ55, but wasn't real keen to hack the shock absorber mount to get it to fit. While I was pondering I found an original FJ55 PS box for $50. I was rapt unitl it turned up in a box, pulled to bits. Cost me $500 to have it rebuilt, but after that it was a straight swap in.
