surf 4x4 button not working

hey was looking at a surf forsale with a mate the other day we went and test drove it and put it ib neutral (auto) and then pushed the 4x4 button there was a click from behind the dash and off we went the only problem was it didnt go into 4x4 as we got stuck i tryed lowrange and it worked but only to the rear wheels (wheel no LSD) can anybody help as apart from this the rest of the car was mint

could be a couple of things if 4x4 is not used much the electric motor on the transferr gets sticky and will not engage and needs to be pulled apart and cleaned the other issue is the front add system is not engageing wich is normally due to a vacum hose beeing knocked off

get a mate to stick his head under next to the gear box then (in neutral obviously) hit the 4wd button listen and see if the transfer engages, if it does then check the vacuum lines they come up on the driver side of the engine bay just in front of the break and clutch bottles.. if they are plugs in try to swop the pipes over on to the other this effectively bypasses the add system (like having manual hubs 'kinda') as assuming its your add system that is stuffed this will get you into 4wd if the transerfer is working...

i have been doing this for years as it is easier the fixing the add system which has sesnors everywhere and is very over engineered.

if this doesn't fix it then don't buy the car :-)

thanx guys i think we are gona have another look at it today
i did lay under the car when he engaged it and there was no noise at all also looked at the vaccum line ( didnt swap them round) but they all seemed connected and not perrished at all.
