hey guys,
i have 96 gq patrol owned for 2 years, problem is put turbo kit on was fine put the 3 row heavy duty radiator in and its fine, problem started this year car is fine up to 80kmh sit on 100 and it creeps up gets to about 3mm under the line before hot turn the heater on its abit lower. had intercooler fitted infront and been told oh its blocking it now there is nothing in front of radiator still same problem got genuine nissan thermostat and it sat on just under 1/3 but temp still came up to the high mark again and will eventually come down and goes up etc, had radiator rodded and flushed is fine flushed the block twice and once with some cleaner stuff put new fan clutch in new coolant
and problem is still there exact same thing changed the thermostat to tridon one, has higher operating temp now its sits just under half way at operating temp which is normal but same issue with getting up to the high hot mark. what else could be causing the issue?? head and head gasket are fine anything under 90kmh is fine no problem egts are fine aswell. any help would be greatly appreciated

has been replaced along with thermo coolant and flushed, head chacked and head gasket done, is not bubling while running with cap off replaced cap isnt overfilling overflow bottle just getting too hot after 90kmh radiator is cleaned and rodded nothing in front of it at all no a/c or intercooler, only thing i can replace left is hoses

Bottom radiator hose might be worth looking at. My old GU had very similar problem however it was anything over 100 - 105, I quite often like to sit on 115. I replaced the bottom hose with a wire wrapped hose, had a spiral of wire inside the hose. As I suspected the hose was colapsing with high revs. Made it alot better.

Is it auto? If so, is it externally cooled? Autos can increase rad temps significantly. Could be the water pump shagged.

Thanks mate i was thinking the same thing so have got a set of top and bottom hoses to put in over the weekend will let you know how it goes, they are very old and soft so could be problem have been shorten too from getting leaksJosh_525 wrote:Bottom radiator hose might be worth looking at. Mate I have exactly the same problem with my 92 turbo'd GQ. I've done everything you've done, including a tune incase it was a fuel problem. I've just bought a top mount intercooler which is on it's way. Let us know how you go with new hoses.

still no change with the hoses, even retorqued the headbolts still same problem, i have 430k still genuine no rebuild, can possibly be precomps priced up a new head suitable for aftermarket turbo was around the 1800 mark with everything on exchange basis looking at going down that track, the problem didnt change from not having intercooler to having one and taking back off. if its the same problem as mine i spoke to a radiaitor specialist today and he said anthing over 60-70 km/h is either flow or the core is blocked so will need a temp drop across the rad to see if its efficient enough but looking like either precomps or flow restriction. if it is precomps you may not be able to tell by the normal head problems like always heating up or bubbles in radiator o coolant lose etc because it will create hot spots and cracks will open up at higher temps so will not be noticeable.Shazza wrote:Mate I have exactly the same problem with my 92 turbo'd GQ. Shit hey. I got a GQ with a 2000 GU engine in it. I've got 410K on mine, don't know the K's on the GU engine. I just bought a top mount cause I've already got air con and horns that block the radiator, going to put a scoop for cooler air flow and see how it runs then. Before I took it into somewhere I changed the thermostat, waterpump, viscus hub as someone had screwed it, fan to the bigger GU one and radiator flushes which came up clean.I took my car to AMMS, where they sent my radiator to a specialist after doing several flushes, they said it was clean and did several flow tests which came up all good. It turned out the new thermostat we put in wasn't completely opening (note to check next time) and it seemed to be ok after that. ... Now I have the same problem again. It doesn't even use any coolant... which you would think getting hot? That's why we thought it may have been too lean and sent it for a tune? Ahh so there's my story...

Its a 'curly one' alright - it looks like you have checked every thing....what about the temp gauge itself? I have 5 GQ's (some as work wagons) and they all read differently! you probably have checked it already but a good VDO temp gauge is a given.

Possibly heat being generated underbonnet is soaking BACK into the motor. Have experienced this one. Raise bonnet, loosen bonnet retaining bolts to allow a 1cm. or so gap at rear edge, retighten bonnet bolts. GQs are very good at retaining motor heat in the engine bay. Lagging exhaust may also help in this regard. Let's know how ya go!

Ahhhh.... The "my patrol is running hot thread" welcome to the world of patrols! Have you been over to patrol4x4 dot com? It's allllllll been tried to different levels of success! The lifting of the bonnet like in a V8 has been done too. Have you fitted a bigger, more free flowing exhaust to get the temps away faster? Put a 3" straight through system on. What level of tune are you running for the turbo? If you are trying to get heaps out of it it will run hot as you are adding more fuel. JPC in Melbourne even do a mod to cross drill your engine and run coolant through it. This is a problem that is wide spread but doesn't hit all, a friend has a JPC tuned comp truck running 220kws at the wheels with no overheating issues, and it's in a 4.2 give them a call. Mine has similar probs when at speed going up hills, will wait till I upgrade to a GU then get some work done by JPC. And check the patrol club patrol4x4.com

i have got a after market speco temp gage in mine because the standard gage sat half way no matter the conditions now you can the rise and fall of the temp. good luck

Creeps upto the H on the stock gauge when towing camper at 100.

i like to have mine under about 90deg celcius at all times. but, sometimes it gets a little higher.
IMO under a 100deg cel with good coolant is pretty safe.
Its the high egt's that are the killer.

Do thermo's infront of the radiator fit?
Or would it be better to remove the fan and just run twin thermo fans?
With a turbo'd engine, is the stock radiator adequate?

I have found and heard from others that thermos work best if you have problems going slow ,the original clutch fan works best for if you have problems on the open road,ie going 100kmh plus.foodie wrote:Do thermo's infront of the radiator fit?
