Re: 90's+ Discovery fuel costs
300tdi is an older style diesel, mechanical injection, turbo and intercooler. Manual Only.
Td5 came in the series II Discovery, same capacity 2.5 but 5 cylinder instead of 4, injected newer style turbo diesel. Td5 has more power but personally I think the real advantage is that the series II has a bigger boot area and in the seven seaters the rear seats face forwards not towards the centre (300tdi series I Disco)
However on some series II models the centre diff lock was removed (although in most you can retrofit the CDL) Have a look on AULRO for more specific details on these. Series II had traction control which is a good system in the Disco's.
The other advantage is the Td5 had an auto as well.
Really depends on what you intend to use it for.

Re: 90's+ Discovery fuel costs
A standard V8 discovery should only use about 15L/100 (highway) and 18L/100 (town), but in all honesty it seems very hard to find one that's not chewing upto and over 20L/100.
Running gas they can use 5-10L more, I personally don't like the dual fuel setups on the EFI rovers due to the possibilty of backfiring and the damage it can cause to the air flow meter.
I can't comment on the diesels as I personally have never owned one.

Re: 90's+ Discovery fuel costs
I have a auto 300TDI 96 model, when I first got it I was getting about 10l/100k (720km / tank), now I only get about 550km /tank around town. Not sure why it has dropped off. In saying that the 550 is my wife driving and doing alot of short trips. When I run 32 mungrels in the bush I get 550km and thats hard going.

My Disco has been in the family from new. Its now hit 13 years old and I can get 16-18 on the hwy if I'm lucky but really struggle to get under 22 around town. I have recently fitted a new vacuum advance module on mine which is the latest splurge in an effort to get the economy back to around 18L/100km around town, as this is what the old boy swears it used to do.
My advice is if you want to do any sort of touring or trips longer than a weekend get a good 300tdi, otherwise range kills you, that's if the fuel bills don't first
I've secretly reverted to driving around the missus' Grand Vitara to and from work at least 3 days a week as it uses literally half the amount of fuel mine uses
