Hi all, I know very little about rovers adn looked for a buyers guide but couldn't seem to find anything.

I am looking at rovers in general (as well as Jeeps but that is for another thread) and curious as to the strengths and weakness of each model, motor, transmission etc. Not too fussed as to petrol or diesel, diesel is obviously preferred but you pay a premium.

What are people thought in general?

My specific use will be weekend warrior/tourer so economy isn't a major concern but reliability is.

For a reliable Land Rover to use for that, IMHO you can't go past the 110's with 3.9 litre diesel up to 1985. Civilian LR from 85 went to weaker gearboxes (LT95 to LT85), but still had the 3.9 diesel till about 89 (2nd best Land Rover) when the 110 was replaced by Defenders with the 2.5 litre 200Tdi.

The 200Tdi is a better engine than the 300Tdi that replaced it (but 200Tdi parts are harder to get now). The 300Tdi was later replaced by the much better TD5. TD5 powered Defenders with the Salisbury rear diff (before it was replaced with the weak P38 style diff) are the pick of the Defenders.

You will have to search and be patient to get a good 110 with 3.9 diesel, because most people with them want to keep them until they are too old to hold a driver's license. Most were station wagons with county trim, but there are some tray backs (the 6x6 is the proverbial hen's teeth to find as most went to mines and have been run into the ground).
