TD42 EGT's
TD42 EGT's
I have a TD42 running a mitsubishi turbo running 9 psi, 3" straight system, front mount intercooler and im not really sure of what EGT's are ok.
Lately when im climbing big hills with a load on its hitting around 560, but it wasnt getting this high over the last few weeks with the same driving so i wound the fuel back a little but im still getting high EGT's and the temp has been getting a bit above half way when normally it wont get over quarter up the hill?
What EGT's are "normal" and what are you getting up hills?

Re: TD42 EGT's
AFAIK rought safe levels for post turbo are 550-600 ish.
pre turbo??? I think 700.
Mine is pre turbo but i top out at under 600 towing big loads.

Re: TD42 EGT's
Hey wozza. My limit for my engine post turbo was 650. I started getting higher EGT's when I started getting blow by from the turbo through the intake system post turbo and through the intercooler. To fix this all I needed to do was to fit a scavenge tank for the pcv hose.
Just pull your intake apart and check that its clean. Including the turbo. Burning engine oil will make your EGT's go pretty high.

Re: TD42 EGT's
550 is the max i let mine get to, 99% of the time il back off at 500.

Re: TD42 EGT's
I take my SD33T to 550 degrees. Running 16psi boost.
The EGT's on a factory SD33T see 650+ quite often.
Is your air filter clean? An intake restriction can result in higher than normal EGT's.

Re: TD42 EGT's
Thanks for the replies, that gives me a idea of whats normal, the air filter is clean and i just fitted a snorkel too, yeah i was getting a bit worried about the temps so today i booked it in to a diesel place for a dyno tune and hopefully thats all it needs is tuning.
I will pull the intake apart tomorrow and give it all a good scrub up.

Re: TD42 EGT's
So do you think that the snorkle might be restricting the air flow? That could definately be the problem. If it is then you'll need to fit a larger snorkle. If thats the only thing that you've changed then I'd say that could definately be the problem.

Re: TD42 EGT's
No it started doing it before the snorkel was installed, its not that easy
Bloody diesel care at Tamworth cant fit me in till the 15th November unreal!

I've heard some ok things about them though so the wait may be worth it.Wozza244 wrote:No it started doing it before the snorkel was installed, its not that easy

Another thing to check is the PCV to see if its blocked. I know it sounds strange but if its blocked it may be pushing oil through the turbo because of preasure build up and causing your EGT's to increase.

Re: TD42 EGT's
Thats the round thing with the hose coming off it at the rear of the rocker cover isnt it? Im sure its the one spitting a little oil out where it runs out down next to the chassis rail.toughnut wrote:Another thing to check is the PCV to see if its blocked. Re: TD42 EGT's
My old gu used to creep past 580 pretty easy .. i don't like anything past 550 personally so i put a factory top mount intercooler on and it used to just hit 550 on 15 psi with 3inch and tune .
Re: TD42 EGT's
Thats the one. Make sure your crank case is able to depressurise properly. The seals in your turbo are the first things to have oil pushed past them. Check your exhaust as well to see if there are signs of oil other than just sooting up as per normal.Wozza244 wrote:Thats the round thing with the hose coming off it at the rear of the rocker cover isnt it? Re: TD42 EGT's
I'm wondering if this might be part of the reason my egt's get up a little sometimes.
Do you reckon if i get a real bad oil smell if i give it the berries from a standing start it could be leaking past the turbo? There's no oil stains on it and there isn't a huge amount of blue smoke coming out the exhaust.
My mates say it's more "grey" then blue or full black sooty. Was thinking maybe the oil coming out might be burning straight away in the exhaust...
I hope it's not the engine itself burning oil..... don't really want to have to strip the thing down!

Re: TD42 EGT's
If you feel like messing around a little you could take the dump pipe off the back of the turbo to see if there is any buildup of residue caked on the wheel. This would indicate that you have oil in the exhaust and would also add to the turbo lag and lower boost pressure if left unchecked for too long.Josh n Kat wrote:I'm wondering if this might be part of the reason my egt's get up a little sometimes.

Re: TD42 EGT's
hmmm yeah that doesn't seem like too much hard work.
problem is if i pull the dump pipe off i'll want to pull the turbo off and once i've gone that far i'll end up replacing it with a bigger one

Re: TD42 EGT's
Well you'll be able to show the minister for finance that all the fins are chipped and broken and you need a new one thats bigger because it will last longer because it won't have to work as hard if its bigger. Just make sure you cover all the nice shiny screw driver marks before you show her.Josh n Kat wrote:hmmm yeah that doesn't seem like too much hard work.

Re: TD42 EGT's
Gday guys when these egts are checked are the checked by using a pyro set up or can you check the temp on the out side of the dump pie with a laser temp gun cheers
Re: TD42 EGT's
Hey tax money came thru last night pass me that screw driver so i can "inspect" that turbo !
"oh sweetie, it doesn't look good... I'm gonna need a whole new turbo!"

Re: TD42 EGT's
pyro inside the dump or pre turbo ideally pre turbo - everyone saying mine does these temps and not mentioning where its measured are a little irrelevant.brendo4b wrote:Gday guys when these egts are checked are the checked by using a pyro set up or can you check the temp on the out side of the dump pie with a laser temp gun cheers
A lazer temp guage will tell you the temp of the dump not the temp of the gas running through it which can change 100's of degrees in seconds where as the dump will slowly heat up / cool down.
Plus pretty hard to push your truck up a steep hill pulling a 110k's with the bonnet up reaching around the a pillar top get to your dump whilst driving lol.
even short probes are not considered very accurate compared to a probe reaching the center of the exhauast flow.
