Custom Rubber Mudflaps...where do you get your Rubber?

Hey guys, wanting to put just straight rubber mud flaps on my tray and get rid of the alloy section due to going bigger tires they will rub. Just wondering where you guys get your rubber from. Due to wanting something about 1mm thick Clark Rubber wants a fortune. Any ideas?

The first ones I made, I used some truck mudflaps, cost me nothing from a local truck wreckers, just cut them to size and painted them black.
They were fine with the 31x10.5 tyres, but not wide enough for the 35x12.5 tyres.
So Ive just made some out of conveyor belt rubber. About 10-12mm thick, an I had to use a handsaw to cut it.
The conveyor belt rubber was a gift from a fellow outers family member. He wanted to get rid of it, and i was ater some.
Just cut to size, and bolted it on.

I get all mine from truckline, mainly because my cousin works there so i get to bum around for a while and try them all until i find a size im happy with.

Ended up getting a 24" wide with a 30" drop and cut it in half, covers a 12.5" tyre and extends from tray all the way down to axle height and was dam cheap.

Could be worth looking at.

Can be bolted on, using large-ish washers and bolts, again, it will not tear or rip off, it's the best stuff!

I sourced mine from a place in Wollongong and actually thought about stocking up on some more and cut them custom to suit people's requirements.

Maybe there is enough interest on forums to start cutting to size and selling mudflaps ready to bolt on?

Postage could be a bit much though to send it down to Vic, the stuff is not light........

Grab the yellow pages and search for rubber products - plenty of places around.
I would advise to stay away from the rubber gimp suits though - unless you are into that sort of thing

A place in Sydney called Grippy Rubber has shed loads of rubber stuff if you cant find something local

at LCMP, got a nice defect notice on the way home.

If that isnt up to scratch they do a steel belted rubber for conveyors... about 12mm thick and is almost impossible to cut except with a guillotine

I have bought rubber from Clarke Rubber for my sierra trayback, however, it is quite heavy considering its purpose, especially if you need large mudflaps.

Another option is urethane, which is what rally cars use. It's much lighter, much more slippery, and holds it's shape better, so it needs less support. It's more rigid too , so it doesn't flap at speed like rubber, which can render a rubber mudflap useless if it's no longer covering a tyre because it's flapping at speed.

Urethane isn't cheap, but it's much better suited to the task. I have urethane mudflaps on my STi which look quite good and have lasted very well. (120,000km and they are still shiny) It also comes in colours.

I've torn heaps of canvas reinforced conveyor rubber when used as mudflaps.

I bought my Urethane Sheet from Revolution Racegear, but I'm sure you can get it from Purple Pig.

My mudflaps don't flap around at all, way too heavy

I just chain them up when I drive on rocks to stop them from getting caught on the tyre when reversing. (I have hooked the chains up with little shackles).

And what did you use to make them sit up for offroad??
I didnt think about that when I put mine on.

I got my rubber from a place down in Wollongong that sells second hand conveyor belt.
They sell by the metre, but you have to find a suitable roll first, some are pretty thick, 15mm+.....

I just used chain and carabine hooks from Bunnings to hold it in place, and tuck it up when wheeling on rocks.

I have just welded half-chainlinks underneath the tray to hook up the carabine hooks and chain.

As I said, they work a treat, don't flap around and if you "tuck" them up when rock crawling, you will never damage or rip them off.

I use 3mm HDPE plastic.

They don't flap at all but they do need to be removed before offroading. I use cable ties.

They look terrible now with big gouges and scratches and bitumen all over them but they still work and still work damn well. Without them I'd have been pulled over by now for sure. But they still hold their shape and point the same way they do as in that second picture.

i have recently done some similar to A.J on the rear of my hilux.The sheet of rubber was from a local shop called country rubber and foam and was a 6mm sheet 1.2m wide,i got a 1.5m long section and ended up not using half of it.It runs along under the bottom of the tray sticking out as flares and then continues down to the axle as a mudflap allthough i havent made them so they chain at the bottom and cant be pinned for offroad yet.under the tray i used 3/16" rivets and builders strapping to stop it tearing through,looks neat and keeps it is shape well and was allready pre drilled

anyway i cant put pics up as 4wdlinks isnt working but it cost me $80 i have over half left and i also used it for front flares cut into a 65mm strip.Pretty cheap in the end i reckon.Will work on getting pics

These are the ones I had before, the truck mudflaps that I cut in half, and also had the flare made from a real estate sign.


I just had a couple of bolts at the top, and then chain at the back.
They were great for the 31s I used to run. But not wide enough for the 35s that are there now.

So I made these.


Made from conveyor belt rubber, was a freebie from Vulc, cheers mate. Cut with a handsaw to size and doubles as flares too.
Have a couple of bolts at the front, then some small bits of galv chain at the halfway mark, and then the long ass bits of chain at the back.

I just need to make up somesort of hook type thing to hold them up while offroad.

just use a small d shakle, thats what i do with mine. similar setup as urs but not a full flare just a thick rubber mudflap with chain holding it.
