few dramas help please

Post by shooter »

ok so the problems im having atm are as follows ( and yes ive been recently defected and need to get this sh*t sorted ASAP )

- Carbi is not holding idle properly n chewing fuel, had a mechanic friend look at it and he wound up the idle screw to get it to sit at about 1300rpm so it wouldn't cut out constantly but hes no pro on carbs n a bit of a d*ck so tries to charge mechanics wages for anything more than 5 mins work.Where can i take it to get fully rebuilt or looked at ( thats open weekends n not going to cost me a left nut ) , i want to replace it with a weber carb but funds dont permit atm.

-Next problem is the tailshaft or as i speak lack of atm, the rear uni decided to cark it and has cut into the rear shaft leaving the holes for the caps rather rounded. Ive got various quotes but $600 for new one isnt an option, would you trust the ones from a wreckers if you replace the unis ?????

-Then there is the front prop shaft, some guy pointed out to me today that it was too short and being a 2 peice that if i went over a big enough bump itd pop out, what can you use to replace this, is it a special custom job or are there 1 peices available or ??????

-Then the ball joints are leaking, id be game to try it myself but dont know how much works involved ive got basic mechanical skills but what would i need n where would i go to to replace them ???????? ive heard snake racing charge $300 for kits but they can be found for $80 at repco if you have a trade account but i dont :S

-Then the rims are locked on buy the security nuts which are now rounded after an attempt to get them off, i spoke to a tyre mob n they reckon you reckon some special nut with flanges inside to remove rounded nuts from rims any idea what this is called ?????????

-ANNNND then there is the drivers side quarter panel, ABC wreckers reckon they have "new ones" and that they haven't had any complaints about them matching up but thats a wrecker not a panel beater. Do u guys know what kind of "new pnales there on about cuase they dont and i want to do some research before i by somenthing thats going to be sketchy.

AAAANNNNNNNNNNNNDDD last problem is painting the quarter panel i have the new hilux blue on my car ( metallic paint) and want to obviously get this replacement panel matched up. Where is a good panel beaters/ painters anywhere thats open on weekends that i can take it, Im not looking for dodgey work but somewhere that wont raught me again ( i just payed $700 for a small ding to get filled and painted n it was shit work! )

AND yes this post does make me sound like the biggest tightarse since scruge himself but if i added up all the quotes im looking at nearly $2500 for the above work where as i know it can be done cheaper and i can spend my moolah on more enjoyable things like a bullbar n spotties :P

Could be the auto choke skitzing out, as the yota ones do, maybe worth it to run a carby kit through it, and rebuild it.
From what Ive heard the webers dont really like angles, so are not much good off road.

Find yourself a second hand 2 piece rear shaft from a wreckers, check for play in the slip joint, if no freeplay, then its should be ok, replace the unis and your done.

-Then there is the front prop shaft, some guy pointed out to me today that it was too short and being a 2 peice that if i went over a big enough bump itd pop out, what can you use to replace this, is it a special custom job or are there 1 peices available or ??????

You can get custom driveshafts made, but they cost a bit, or you can make youre own out of RHS, but balancing it can be a big issue.
Unless youve moved your front diff forward, the stock shaft should be ok. Maybe post up a pic of the front shaft so we can see for ourselves.

If youre talking about the front axles leaking then you need to replace the axle seals, you can get the full front axle rebuild kit, but they normally dont come with wheel bearings.
When I rebuilt the front axle on mine, the kit was $180 and $35-$40 a side for wheel bearings, they were the cheapest prices I could find where I am, I have heard of the kits being cheaper. So look around.
As for doing the work, its not as hard as it would seem, but it is tricky and very messy, theres a link to a very helpful thread I posted in the Lux Bible.

-Then the rims are locked on buy the security nuts which are now rounded after an attempt to get them off, i spoke to a tyre mob n they reckon you reckon some special nut with flanges inside to remove rounded nuts from rims any idea what this is called ?????????

No idea mate, but you could probably weld a nut or something on and then use that to loosen he locknuts.

-ANNNND then there is the drivers side quarter panel, ABC wreckers reckon they have "new ones" and that they haven't had any complaints about them matching up but thats a wrecker not a panel beater. Do you mean the front guard??
You should be able to pick them up second hand fairly cheap from the wreckers. I think I paid $50 for one at the wreckers.

What exactly is wrong with the guards you have now??

AND yes this post does make me sound like the biggest tightarse since scruge himself but if i added up all the quotes im looking at nearly $2500 for the above work where as i know it can be done cheaper and i can spend my moolah on more enjoyable things like a bullbar n spotties :P
Ive done my best to answer your questions.
You can always save money by doing the jobs yourself, and you get to learn how to do the jobs.
Before I started the axle rebuild, I had no idea whatsoever on how to do it, but some help from the people on here has got me through alot of jobs.

Good luck.

Cheers mate,
Yer its front drivers side guard mate smashed into it so he's replacing it. But I want to make sure it gets painted properly as the passenger side door is noticeably different shade in the sun. Any recommended painters in brizz????

Front shaft according to a mate of mine should be ok n if it ever popped out then to replace it. But if I get time ill post up a pic.

Is there a specific brand of kit for the front axles???? I do hit up a fair bit of mud which I'm guessing is what causes them to fail.

And next thing that on the list was bullbars, I've been told that the 88 lux need modifications to fit a bar on, is this true and will my 2"bodylift affect how it sits?

And last thing was whilst im at the wreckers I'm going to look at putting in another fuel tank or a larger tank cuz the 40l is pretty dismal, any ideas of budget dual tank options? I'm looking to get 80l min and still have the tank under the tray.

Cant help there as Im in NSW.

Get a pic for a better answer about the front shaft.
If the shaft is stock, and you havent moved the front diff forward, then I cant see any problem.
If youve moved the front diff forward, then maybe it will be. But you can get tailshaft spacers to fix that.

Is there a specific brand of kit for the front axles???? I do hit up a fair bit of mud which I'm guessing is what causes them to fail.

Go to a bearing shop, and tell them you need a front axle rebuild kit, and some wheel bearings to do both sides.
The kit will have all oil seals, kingpin bearings, all gaskets and washers needed to to the front axle.
Make sure you use high temperature whel bearing grease on the wheel bearings, and grease them thoroughly.
The thread I posted in the Hilux bible has some great info for you.
Special tools required for the job are.
54mm Hub Socket, you can get these for between $15 and $30 off ebay.
Circlip pliers, you want the ones that open up as you squeeze the handle.
Fit new wheel bearings at the same time.

If you do alot of mud, then make up some extended diff breathers, there are lots of different ways to make them, do a search here, theres lots on info about these.

And next thing that on the list was bullbars, I've been told that the 88 lux need modifications to fit a bar on, is this true and will my 2"bodylift affect how it sits?

First time Ive heard that, you can get front bars to fit any model Lux, there are 4 bolts on the front, that a bumper bolts to, just use them. But get high tensile bolts, and maybe reinforce the captive nuts on the car.
And when you fit te bodylift, you will need to add some metal to the bar brackets to lift it up as needed.

And last thing was whilst im at the wreckers I'm going to look at putting in another fuel tank or a larger tank cuz the 40l is pretty dismal, any ideas of budget dual tank options? I'm looking to get 80l min and still have the tank under the tray.

Im still using the stock tank on mine, but you can sometimes find second hand long range tanks on here, or ebay.

for future reference the carbi issue was a fuel idle solenoid,

tailshaft and ball joints were sent into a mechanic to fix about $1200 in total

quarter panels can be obtained new from ABC wreckers for about $90

There are mobile spray painters that will come to you and paint them for about $250 for metallic blues( includes paint on the spot computer generated mixing etc)
