advice on nl 1999 pajero swb reliability/issues

Post by jonnyjtop »

hey guys i am a bit nervous about buying what i am looking at some advice would be appreciated..im looking at a nl 2door 3.5l v6 manual seems all good but so did my nh swb until i had to replace just about every component on it..just wondering does the nl suffer from the same problems that the nh does..
EG:oil leaks, valve stem seals, weak gearbox, ect ect or were they engeneered a bit better than the 3.0 v6

would really like to get into a turbo diesel ute eg navara/triton ect so if its not worth it i might spend the little bit extra ill hold out a bit and get one of those, i know that pajeros come tdi but i only really like the swb ones..thanks.

Any vehicle over 10 years old can suffer oil leaks, and I guess valve stem seals could also be an issue at that age, depending on how well it's been looked after. The 3.5 does have twice as many of them...

Gearbox will definitely be stronger than the NH - it's a different, physically larger unit. I'm not aware of any particular weakness with them, but some would argue I'm simply not aware.

If you ultimately want a td ute, why are you looking at a shorty Paj?

The 3.5 papers are stronger all round, motor, gear box, diff, mine cops an absolute floggin. Set up right, they'll go anywhere a patrol or landcruiser will go and for a lot less coin outlay.

I have given my NL as bigger floggingas any other 4x4 I have owned .. ( execuse the spelling I hae also had a few durifs)

Stuff i have busted in the past 50,000 K's ... 2 second hand alternators a stater motor anad a motor (the motor issue was not a "pajero issue bit a piss poor maintenace issue by a prevous owner) ... Other than that low rmage has been used in anger at least weekly water (floods) in the past three monts has seeb water (windscreen depth mometarily) a couple of tines .. Kid who low "mud pools" and "splash" on the local traks quite frequently .. realisticaly the NL has been bloody tough and if another bub was not sue I would be very happy to keep it indefinately ... ( I have owned and wheelfd hard GU's X1, dudlux x2, 80 series x1, suzuki x3, landrover disko x1) .. I would happily buy another Paj
