WHAT GPS FOR COMPS?

Post by WelchyGQ »

what GPS's are ppl running?

i want to use it for comps and also be able to use it in the tourer when required.

Would prefer not to spend thounsands and thousands but dont want to buy rubish either - would prefer something bigger than a handheld unit.

was looking at the garmin 276C but they arent made anymore.

Thanks,

welchy

I just ordered a garmin 3206 from the states. It is available with an Australian map card so you can use it for touring down the track if you want. It's a dash mount unit with external keypad and you can get one to your door for less then a grand at the moment. Saw one in action a couple of weeks ago an was pretty impressed by it's accuracy. Has an inbuilt antenna and u can get an external plug in one aswell. Possibly worth a look, cheers

I do the Pajero Challenge, Nav runs etc, and found that a small tablet style computer is the go. Try searching on ebay for a second hand toughbook or opentec tablet. You can get mounts so they just plug in to the dash. Something running XP with OZI explorer is so much more adaptable than a dedicated GPS system. I can use the onboard GPS, GPS mouse, or garmin marine system, I connencted up a thumb ball mouse and velcro'd it to the seat/pants, and a seperate numberpad for quick co-ords entry so the navi can perform navigation on the fly.
And works out cheap too, and is usefull for normal navigation. You can install carputer type software (eg destinator) for easy access to tunes, turn-by-turn navigation, and internet connectivity.
The best thing about having 2 cars, is when you stack one, the other breaks down in sympathy! Can I bum a lift?
