Changing diffs in 2 door Classic...

Changing diffs in 2 door Classic...
Hi guys,
I have an 81 2 door and im interested to find out what is required to swap diffs with something, dare i say it, more reliable.
I intend to run 37"'s of rubber or so, locked at the rear or possibly both. Im not in a hurry and will be looking to do this over the next 6 months or so.
The 2 door was at one stage locked at both ends, but was told the lockers chewed out ? with the front diff being swapped out with a non locking diff, and the rear locker (maxi i believe) disconected. The CDL has also been disconnected (or doesnt work). I also have the donor car that donated the front diff, complete with a gearbox, transfer, various axles and crap in the back of it, Most of it being either used, abused or broken. I will of course be playing with the suspension (twin shocks give me wood), currently it has a 2" bilstein combo that will be getting junked.
Budget isnt really something i have put any thought into (and i wont be), i would much prefer to let it snowball and try to hide it from the mrs. Hopefully.
I guess what im asking for is some guidance on the subject, links or opinions or advice frome anyone who has done it before. I cant convince myself to keep the rover diffs as they both need rebuilding, the lockers i do have are more then likely destroyed, the parts i have in the back of the donor are too far gone and if your in for a penny you may as well go in for a pound. One day i will be looking for more power, so i dont want to re do things down the track.

There isa no 4.3 for Nissan diffs. Nissan have 4.375 ratio.HSV Rangie wrote:...Both have 4.3 ratios...
Only 4.11 is available for Nissan and Toyota in ~9 inch.

Re: Changing diffs in 2 door Classic...
I'm currently setting up the same, a 2 door set up with the Rovertracks gear in and looks like I'm up for about $4500 with ARB lockers could be cheaper if I use a detroit in the rear but still won't get much change out of $4k

Thanks for all the comments guys, i intend nto spend the weekend stripping both cars down to assertain exactly what i have at the moment, and what condition it is all in.
Troll00, Im interested to hear more about your setup. What gearing are are you going to run? And what suspension setup will you be using, im assuming custom?

Hehe, putting in a front diff, that is actually weaker than a roverTroll00 wrote:Will be Toy Hilux rear 4.3 & 79 series front 4.3 high pinon

Wanted: Car trailer or beaver tail truck, let me know what you got
Re: Changing diffs in 2 door Classic...
Diffs that are weaker than rover. I dont think so mate as I have this conversion. You need to know what you are talking about before commenting.

Re: Changing diffs in 2 door Classic...
rovered, i think its you who should need to know what you are talking about. 100 series 4.3 high pinion is weak as. Matt definately knows what he's on about.

Re: Changing diffs in 2 door Classic...
I ran the exact diff combo that Trollo and Rovered are talking about in my Rangie with RoverTracks axles and an ARB front and Detroit rear.
Zero breaks.
Maybe you other guys need to heed the same advice that was bluntly passed onto me by someone far more experienced than everyone in this thread combined...
Learn how to drive without breaking your shit!
Heaps and heaps of guys here and in the States are running similar set ups on 37" and above tyres with very few problems. Team DGR have been competing on hilux diffs for YEARS with very few problems on 37" and bigger tyres.
The diff combo works.
My 2.75 cents.

Re: Changing diffs in 2 door Classic...
Have you seen the terrain that the Formula Toy cars drive in the States? If that's not fun then you need to get the hell out of Victoria and wheel something other than mud.cloughy wrote:Dat's fun not so muchMicka wrote: Learn how to drive without breaking your shit!

Re: Changing diffs in 2 door Classic...
Think Matt was refering to the 4.3 high pinion being weak, not the toy conversion itself. I ran the 4.1 conversion in my old rangie and never had a problem, much stronger than the rover diffs. But from whats been read and experience with people we know that have 100 and 79 series, the front diff (4.3)seems to be made of cheese, suprising how easy they break.
