I'm about to start up my freshly rebuilt 12ht, but i have a few queries first...
I can only find the 'hot' valve clearances documented, so is there a rule of thumb to help set them cold before the initial startup? Once she is warm i will set them again 'hot' but i need a starting point first!
Also, what is the smartest way to fire it up? I thought about leaving the injectors out and cranking it over to get oil pressure before actually letting it fire, but then i'll have fuel spraying everywhere, unless there is a way to stop the injector pump squirting? It is a fresh oil pump and is packed with grease so it should get oil pressure nice and quick i think..
Any ideas/recommendations would be great!
Also, any special run in tips for diesels?.. Is it pretty much the same as a petrol motor?

Set the clearances to the warm specs, then re adjust when it's running and warm.
Install all the injectors and lines. Fill the filter with diesel before fitting to make it easier. Prime it with the feed pump plunger at the filter nipple, and also the bleed valve on the pump. Usually it's at the top near the lines. Next step is to loosen all the injector lines at the head and crank the engine till fuel comes out of them. During this time oil pressure should build. Have the person holding the key keep an eye on it. Once diesel is coming out of the lines at the head start tightening each one. Been a while since i did one of those inline pumps but I remember they can be a pain in the arse because just a little bit of air can stop the engine dead. It's all about working the air out at each point. If you cant get diesel at the filter, try going back to the next fitting towards the tank. Don't forget the water seperator about halfway down the driver side of the chassis. Clean it out and fill it with diesel.
When running in don't rev the nuts off it, and don't lug it. Won't hurt to load it up, but keep it at or above the peak torque (around 2000rpm)

The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
