2LTE onto 5LTE

Post by Luxsmith »

Hi all,

New to forums so bear with me.

Have a 02 Hilux 5LE and want some more berries.

I have read that the 2LTE turbo kit from a manual 2.4 Surf will fit straight on to the 5LE(might have to shift a egshaust stud or two). I have also read that the ECU plugs directly into the Hilux. I know that you should plumb the oil return line from the turbo into the sump and theres a egshaust line on the intake manifold that needs to be blanked.

I have lined up a complete kit from a 93 model 2.4 Surf inc. ECU for $900 from a private seller. I intend to post pics and info on the install to remove any myths and provide a accurate build up for future referance.

If any one has done this conversion on the ECU controled models I would appreciate any facts you can provide. I dont wan't max KW's or Nm's. Just want reliable low$$$ boost.

Q. Does the Surf ECU provide extra fuel when turbo boosts?
Q. Do you still need to screw up the diesel pump given that it is ECU? if so how many turns?
Q. Will under fueling cause any damage to the engine?
Q Any other usefull tips.

Hopefully this will clear up a few questions for lots of people.
Cheers

I put a turboglide kit off my old 2.8 onto my 5Le, I bought a diesel power chip from turbo tech in perth which has easy instructions for install and with this you can simply turn it up and down depending on what power you want from it.

I have 4 usable settings on mine 1-4, 1 gives 8-9 psi boost 4 gives 13-14.5 psi boost, so if I am towing I turn it up but generally I leave it down.

Not sure if the surf ecu works, but it would be fueling for a 2.4 not a 3.0L..

I did get it put on the dyno and tuned, but I had to get different waste Gate for the turbo.

Edit; I didn't touch the fuel pump, it's all electronic and controlled through the ecu.

Why the different Waste Gate mate?

Any one know if the Surf ECU plugs straight into the Hilux (5LE)?

I'm useing my whole budget to buy the Turbo Kit so im not keen to spend another 7-1200 quid on a DP Chip.

I wanted it so it was adjustable, the waste gate actuator that was on there was a fixed pressure.

Turns out that now I don't need to adjust it, the higher I turn the computer module up, the more fuel goes in thus giving higher boost. The ecu only controlls the fuel

As far as I knew 16 months ago when I did it I needed the piggy back type chip, could not find anyone or any info on using the surf ecu.

I'm told it does. The same fuel pump is used on the 2LT-E as the 5LE just that the fuel is increased (via fuel pump) to suit the larger displacement.

The only thing stopping people turning a 3L into a 3LT-E is the absence of a CAS .... which the 5LE has ;)
I intended on doing exactly this but couldn't find a reasonably priced 5LE .... so went V8 instead

Maybe someone close to you from the surf forum has a spare 2LT-E ECU (to suit a manual as auto's are different) you could borrow to double check the plugs are the same.

Where abouts are you, may be able to help.

you have the best of both worlds, basically the only adjustment is the fuel enrichment, I i have been after a 5LE for a while, really only for the cas as I really connot be f d sorting out autos ecus etc,
everthing is almost identical bar 600 cc's, best advice, runs standard surf boost get EGTs, up boost and fuel till max at 600 in absolute peak, really good oil and cooling maint should be fine

Thanks guys for the info.

I'm in Batemans Bay (south east NSW) mr Dj. Am going to pick up the kit on Saterday so I'm gonna jump in the deep end and so how it all goes.

Will post pics.

Forgive the ignorance but what is a CAS and EGT's

Q. Does the Surf ECU provide extra fuel when turbo boosts?dont quote me but im fairly sure that it will
Q. Do you still need to screw up the diesel pump given that it is ECU? if so how many turns?if u have some extra coin look into fitting a boost compensator
Q. Will under fueling cause any damage to the engine?yes it will run lean and eventually blow the motor. spend the coin get it dyno and tune, bigger injectors, maybe a pwr chip
Q Any other usefull tips.

Hopefully this will clear up a few questions for lots of people.

Ok so I have picked up the kit and the ECU and the Turbo's in good condition and everthing is there to do the job.( I'll try insert photo's but im not sure how to do it on here).

First thing I wanted to do was see if the ECU was a direct swap. It isn't  .

The Hilux ECU has four female plugs from the loom and the Surf has three.
Two of the plugs went into the Surf ECU. One didn't fit and the other was flapping in the breaze.

I tryed the start the car with the two that did fit and it just wound over and wouldn't start. I didn't keep trying incase it f*#k'd something.

I don't know scwat about ECU harnesses so I don't know were to go from here.

I might try sell the ECU from the Surf and put the coin towards a Piggy Back Chip for the Lux ECU????????????????

If you give me the part # on the ECU, I can double check what it's from for you.

My truck has never been past 375°C, that's fully loaded, hot day and 14 psi boost.

That's post turbo at start of dump pipe.

Cheers mate,

There are two numbers on it.

89661-35691
175800-1221.

Fitted the body lift today and the 33" MTZ's are on there way.

Rang a Turbo tuning shop today to ask some questions about ECU upgrades and the bloke wouldn't give me the time of day because I'm not buying a $4000 turbo kit from him. Told me he has the uprade for turboing the 5LE but he wouldn't sell it to me because I might blame him if it f#*ks out.

Does a Piggy Back chip like the Turbotech type compensate for boost?

Would it suit my application ie. Fit the turbo kit, plug it into the harness (some where) and away I go?

Can I get away with driving it for a while before getting it tuned?

It's my daily driver so can't be with out it for long.

ECU part # 89661-35691 suits a 2LT-E built 05/1992 - 07/1993 (and the last ones built in 1994)

The turbotech chip is the one I have, I presume it does compensate for boost as the computer does monitor everything.

Not sure about driving it without the chip, I was told to put it on before I drove it.

They don't just plug in, but they have detailed instructions and are easy to install, just cut into a few wires that go to the ecu, I put mine in... Easy as!

Turbo glide in nsw do a chip for I think $550 but at the time I was living in Wa and they would only do install only, (they would not ship it to me to put it on myself)

Rang a couple of Power Chip companys today without any joy. Very reluctant to answer any questions! Makes me wonder what the after sales service would be like. :bad-words:

$800 is a lot of money to fork out if it's not going to work.

Can any one tell me for sure if a Power module/chip will increase the fuel rate to compensate for boost on a standard 5LE ECU?

Also anyone know if an engineers cert. is required after fitting the turbo?
