Howdy guys
Well i have stuffed the rear uni joint on my tail shaft. So pulled it out for a clean up and to replace the uni's.... all was well for the first 5 min cleaned it up with 2 cans of degreaser and another of crc. Took of the circlips but i cant move the end cap things at all.. i have been beating them with a cold chizel and gimpi forever and nothing has moved as all... I have only ever done this once before on a new car and it was easy.. it turns out 20 years of abuse means these babys wont budge.
So if anyone has any little tricks that can help i am all ears.. i don't have a press as that was my second option but i don't have on so it wont work but yeah i need ideas and help guys as pockets are not deep enouph to pay some1 to do it..

Usually placing a suitably sized socket over the end cap and giving it a few good hits will see it come loose. Also try to set up the driveshaft so there is no bouncing or other movement when you hit the socket - a few blocks of wood should do the trick.
If that fails, you can set them up in a vice using the socket again or otherwise a press may be your only option.

If you have the new unis ready to go, take the lot to your local diff/gearbox joint, shouldnt be too much.
I paid 20 bucks to have mine replaced, I had the new unis ready to go in, I just didnt want to stuff around with it.
Its another option for you.

I've a small piece of rail that I use as a base .. then I place a large socket .. like 24mm with the open end upwards on the rail ( just needs to have an internal diameter greater then the outer diameter of your uni).
Then get the tail shaft and place the yoke onto the socket such that if the uni fell out it would fall into the socket.
Then I get an impact socket or one you dont care about .. and place it on the top of the yoke .. this socket should be smaller then the end cap of the uni.
Then I take a sledge hammer and pound the living shit out of it. Hitting the smaller socket from above. Thus pushing the entire uni through the yoke. Once the cap comes up the other side remove the cap flip the yoke and then use the same method to punch it out the other side. Once you've both end caps off you should be able to get the uni out.
10 years of beach work on my jeep .. and it took quite a lot of swearing and bashing .. but this method got the rusted buggers out eventually.
It's low tech ... but it's worked for me and I've since changed quite a few uni's on my heep like this.
