nissan axles in a defender?
hi from germany.
looking for information on a swop to patol axles on my defender 110.
are the realy stronger than the landrover axles?
i can get my hands on to axles from a 2,8 l td patrol (called GR in germany), is it worth the bother of fitting them into the defender?

Hi Earl.
The TÜV or DEKRA will be very happy about you.
Just the custom drag link and panhard bar and the mounting on the rear axle for the a-frame will make it impossible.
Also the rims are not fitting any more, the track is wider and the breaks are never tested with the master cylinder.
You should put Toyota gear in your Rover housings - the TÜV/DEKRA wont see that.
But yes the Nissan Patrol axles are stronger but the rear axle is not suitable because the pumpkin is not off set.
And the ratio of the 2.8 TD is a bit low for your car (i think it is 4.6:1).
Best would be to use a front axle of a GR (here it is a GQ) petrol and the rear axle of a Toyota 80 LC.
But the Landcruiser axle will be very hard to find in Germany and the matching gearing for it even harder.

i am thinking of using the nissan axles because the are more or less readily available in here and dont cost a fortune.
true , the gearing is lower than the original landrover,but with the 4,63 ratio from the nissan diffs,if i use the defender tranfer case the gearing will be down by about 33% and with the dicovery transfer case by about
13%. i could fix that by using bigger tires.
the big advantige is that the low range will be much lower than the original .
the front axle fits in quite easily, the rear axle needs a little bit more attention, but that is ok. my main concern is evtl. driveline vibes. because the nissan diff is in the middle.
can a person fit 37 inch tires without too much concern?
toyota parts in my axles ? i guess thats way past my budget.
are the 80 series axles with the original lockers just as strong as the nissan axles?
i use my defender to tow , go offroading and to go to the sahara.
i have ARB lockers front and rear and have 255/ 85 /16 bf goodrich MTs on it.
and yes , i have a few problems on the front axle.
it has a sals. in the rear.

If you have a Sals rear I can not see any reason to change to a nissan. You could buy new axle shafts for the sals: Hi-Tough Eng, Rovertracks or Ashcroft. You could upgrade it to a dana 60 and go 35 spline with Rovertracks kit....
with regards to the front end, what problems are you having now? you could either do the toy conversion (once again keith from Rovertracks can help with this kit) or do the nissan swap....
Definitly ring Keith and get some prices I think you will be suprised what can be done and it wont require the work of fitting nissan stuff

I'm still trying to figure out why you are breaking axles or CVs on that type of terrain
There are no real issues with fitting the Nissan diffs other than the vibration from the rear tailshaft. The front is easy to do and the rear just needs you to weld on an A-frame mount.
But I would toyota convert the front and change the rear ratio to suit.
