Has any one done or looked into fitting a Variable Geometry Turbo on the non Common Rail Hiluxs?
There are some guys on Mercedes Benz forums that have played around with manual control actuators.
Any one got a basic explanation of how the manual setups work?
I was given a Garrett GT2056v VGT and I think if it was set up rite would be great for getting early spool on my 5le.

VGT on a 5le

Re: VGT on a 5le
How does the manual controller work? Does it have some kind of ramping function or something? If not there isn't much point in having a variable vane turbo.
Also 5le runs a MAP sensor, it may not like having boost in the inlet.

Have a read of this thread:

Basically an idea of mine that could be quite simple and cheap, but I haven't got around to testing yet. Uses the original vacuum actuator.

Vac valve spring holds vanes in full open possition.drr wrote:How does the manual controller work? Does it have some kind of ramping function or something? If not there isn't much point in having a variable vane turbo.

On start up no boost, vac closes actuator and vanes.
Counteracting valve uses boost to open vanes as boost builds.
Vac is stronger than boost so helper spring for the boost valve can be used to get a responsive action.
I don't know much about it at all so if any one can shed more light on it in layman terms, i'd appreciate it.
KiwiBacons thread link is very helpfull.
There are plenty of turbo kits available for the 5le so I don't think there is going to be a problem with the air flow meter.
I'm going to get the pump re cal'd at Denco in Wagga for the turbo.
