Afternoon chaps and chapettes,
93, 80 series 1fz-fe.
having in issue with ole toyota service manager at the moment, I have taken it in to get the aircon compressor replaced. after waiting 2 days to for a phone call to pick it up, I call them and they tell me they are waiting for the clutch magnet as the old one was cactus. Fair enough.
I wait another two days and then have to call them again as I have not heard a wink. still waiting for aforementioned part.
The question is should this magnet not be a part of the brand new compressor? If not would be be logical to order a new one if replacing the whole compressor to start with? I contacted the service manager regarding this as the local aircon mob say it is all part of their compressors but they were not sure about the toyota ones but he told me he had no idea.
Cheers

Re: Air-conditioning compressor
what did you take it in there for? to have the whole a/c compressor complete replaced. or for them to diagnose the fault and repair. having never pulled one apart before i am unsure if the clutch magnet comes off or not. but i would say you can replace the clutch magnet seperate. surely they could source a non genuine clutch somewhere. or they would have an a/c compressor complete that they could remove the clutch from and fit that and refit it to there stock compressor when it comes in. how come you took it to toyota and not to a local auto electrican or a/c shop?
home brew cooling in progress
Re: Air-conditioning compressor
Nope, that wouldn't be part of their dealership agreement with Toyota!surely they could source a non genuine clutch somewhere
I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.

firstly, took it there cause their was a rasping old bearing sound going on that i could pinpoint to idler pulley and somewhere else, Toyota told me it was ac and the compressor had given up the ghost it so needer replacing, then after disassembly and ac compressor ordered and arrive told me clutch was also buggered hence current problem.
I normally would do such work myself or take it to in independent workshop but as I am about to move back to Brisbane and it is aircon/gas and undertake a very long drive with a trailer in tow with lots of empty space between tiny towns i wanted to get it done somewhere that would have a warranty i could use in between and back in brissy if it went guts up on the way there.
However have decided if it is not sorted tomorrow, I am going to tell them to put it back together as is and take it to the local A/C place because it has been over a week they have had the car and I am getting the poops.
Cheers

Re: Air-conditioning compressor
Sounds like they misdiagnosed it. And thought it was a compressor bearing rather than the magnetic clutch bearing. The compressors do not come with the magnetic clutch, I've replaced one on my old camry before (under warranty , benefits of being a dealership mechanic)
Re: Air-conditioning compressor
Speaking of camrys - their compressors are the same as the '80 so now you've got a whole lote more scope for finding bits.
