They went well at 18 PSI (still waiting for the seats to bed properly before I attempt anything lower). Unfortunately no mud out there to speak of last Sunday but the extra clearance was distinctly noticable. The grip on rocks seems to be OK in the dry, will have to wait to see what it is like in the wet.

The reason its a bad idea to name something a "mall run" is that most of the showpony 4x4's (big rubber, big lift, shiny and never goes offroad) or RAV 4's, CRV's etc etc are mallers ... basically that is what they are for.. they hang around the mall .. generally driven by mums and posers ..

I see what you mean, I hate trucks that drive around with lifts and you can tell that they never wheel. But the mall isn't even built yet and makes a easy trial to play around in.

Driving around a construction site isn't exactly wheeling. The"obstacles" aren't exactly anything more than some dirt. You'll need to do better than that

true that's why we only went when it snowed 1/2 to a foot of snow or it was mudy out there was a few moderate places in around there.

I'm not trying to say it was hard core in the mall run, my key point to that link was the sportage pulling a landrover out. And seems to me you guys didn't check out the other link I posted of the other lifted sportages

I got to see the Kia last night at the zook club meeting - it kinda looks like a miniture 100 series land cruiser due to its curvy panels and larger tyres.

No news yet. Our contact has had to make a trip from S.K. back to the US for his missus to have some surgery (read thread). Should know more after 26/6/04 when he will be back in S.K.

Hilux/Forerunner- too agricultural, too much ass-end overhang, poor IFS articulation, large turning circle.
Suzuki - too fragile/light
Nissan Patrol/Toyota Landcruiser - too large
Mitsubishi Pajero - possibility, but too expensive from new. Bit too big for one or two people. Poor IFS articulation

Kia Sportage - nice size, Military vehicle underpinnings, relatively cheap -> more money for mods - even if they are more expensive custom mods. (there was a price difference of $6K to a Suzuki GV (smaller) - so far I have spent less than $1500 on mods) Coil sprung IFS with 10" of wheel travel STOCK (cf IFS Landcruiser 9"!!!), rear 16" wheel travel stock, with lift now 20". Lowest point under vehicle with 2.5" lift and 31" tyres is 340mm (rear pumpkin 270mm, btw standard Eaton Positrac LSD), wheelbase 2600mm track 1520mm (now), 800mm fording depth(now), 35:1 low first (cf Suzuki GV 27:1, Patrol 38:1, Landcruiser 46:1, Pajero ca. 40:1). Have a good look at the chassis. If the Kia chassis looks strong enough to mount missile launchers on, that's because they do!!!

Went out a while back on a trip (Suzuki Club Vic) that included an IFS and beam axle Hilux, and matched or bettered their abilities, certainly had a lot less hassles despite them having lockers an me only the rear LSD. The only vehicle that beat me on ability on that trip was a fully locked Zook Sierra lifted with 33-35" tyres and rockhoppers.

"Bogged" (Bruce) has been out with me on a trip when my vehicle was stock, and there weren't any real adverse comments from him at that time or since, which is something from someone that is not afraid to call a spade a f***ing spade.

Take the blinkers off....The Kia is as "real" as a Forerunner/IFS Hilux ( and beam axle Hilux??), IFS 'Cruiser, Patrol, Zook, or any of the other types you are alluding to. Its only problem is it is unrecognised as such.

Yes but most people would wonder why you would fit a 5" lift to a lux and run 32's, those trucks are unstable enough at ground level.
