80 Series Tie Rod Ends

Firstly I have done a search with no luck.

I bought a new set of tie rod ends to replace my current ones on the 80 series.

the ones i bought look like this:

HOWEVER i went to replace them only to notice that the ones on my car are different.

All 4 on my car look the same and the 2 smaller ones from the link........but the car is a 1992 which means the ones i bought are meant to fit.

What i mean is that i dont have the one with the extra hole (i assume for a steering dampner) or the slightly longer one below it.

Does this seem right to anyone? I would assume that if the guy before me replaced the standard ones with the short ones on the car atm the steering would be well out (which it isnt)..........

Any help would be much appreciated!!!

what is your steering dampener bolted to right now then
can see one in your profile if that the truck in question

maybe a pic of what you have would help

i have 2 80 series a 97 and a 90 both have same as on the ebay pic

it is bolted to one of those double u-bolt brackets that goes around the tie rod itself.......i will try and get some picks up asap

The new tierod end with the hole in it bolts onto the steering box.

yeh i know thats where its meant to go however if i replace the shorter 2 on that front rod with the 2 longer ones from the kit then the overall length of that frst tie rod will increase significantly meaning that "centre" on the steering box would be pushed out (if you follow what i mean)

Im guessing the steering link is not oem, and it been way too long for oem tierod ends?

well that is what i dont really know......

either it is longer than OEM or the wheel alignment has just compensated for the shorter ends?

is there a centre to a steering box? Also does my first picture look like the pitman arm is in the correct position for the wheel pointing straight?

And the steering box looks straight to me, so the link has got to be too long.

well that is a much better looking steering dampner...........anyway!

so i just measured my front tie rod and it measures 965mm long excluding the ends and nuts. Can anyone confirm the length of the pole itself OEM?

also i noticed that your front rod has the same clamp style locks as my rear one but my front one has a nut lock system.

Could it be a heavy duty item such as this? (no markings on it):

On yours they must have mix/matched parts, oem is only 880mm, or they may have used a rear one on the front?

Here is an aftermarket steering link, but still uses oem type tierod end.

your steering link in your pic is definitely not standard. all 80series have the same arms.

the ebay link you posted is for an aftermarket tie rod which is the rod tieing the two front wheel together behind the diff.

you also have a Return to Centre steering damper on yours, an ordinary damper (without the spring) like UDM posted is a better option

To me it looks like a snake racing drag link, could be wrong thou.

yeh so i guess my two options would be try and get an OEM steering link or take the one on my car appart and see if the smaller tie rod ends will fit and if so just get 2 more of them?

In regards to the RTC it is leaking and is on my to do list to replace with a damper to improve the handling! (along with replacing the steering box and re-sealing the power steering pump!)

Out of interest does anyone have a spare OEM steering link?!

hey mate,

this is a easy fix goto your local spare part shop... 1st of all you will need to work out which thread you will need I.E left hand or right thread. once thats sorted ask for a

TE995 which is a left hand thread
or
TE997 which right hand thread

if the shops say its too hard go away, let me know and ill sort something out for you as i have got heaps in stock at work...

Yea mate thats the part number,

by the look at the pic there the tie rods that will fit....
