I ran a soft top for nearly 10 years ... never really leaked at all.

If one likes the look of soft top then one will put up with whatever, otherwise if your mate is concerned about leaks then he's better of getting a hardtop. Yes some do leak but there's been problems also with hardtops leaking!! My hardtop leaks but only driving in a heavy down pour!! It's a pits but hey at least my feet are clean!!

I brought a new one in 98. Drove it for an hour to mates place, took roof off, got rained on hour later. Never worried about rain after that

Usually a proper fitting soft top will not leak at all, wrangler factory soft tops are the best in the business.

I can't speak of JK's, but my TJ's factory top is 10 years old and my viking is 4 years old and no leaks in heavy rain ;) 10 years with many more to go is a pretty good lifespan :)

Never leaking doesn't make a good soft top. I would take a good guess that the japanese and germans can put together a soft top a bit better than the Yanks can. :D
