hj75 transfer won't dissengage

just brought 1989 hj75 troopie,engadged 4 wheel drive to see if works,made funny noise when put and driven in reverse,foward was fine.now can't get transfer case out off 4 wheel drive.any help would be appreciated thanks

Try disengaging whilst gently getting on and off the power, try forward and reverse. Alternatively unlock the hubs and try the same again.

unlock the hubs and do what dogbreath says, sometime have to do few yards in reverse,
change the oils and fill with recomended oil when released. The ball join thingy might also be full of mud and jamed,
