Ebay Pyro/Boost Gauge deal
Hey lads. What do you think of this VDO Pyro and Boost Gauge deal off Ebay? Is it the correct position to install the sender in he exhaust or should it be closer to the turbo because won't the reading be more accurate. Or should it be between the engine and turbo and is this a resonable amount to pay? Any help is appreciated, thanks Dave

Re: Ebay Pyro/Boost Gauge deal
I have these gauges and have been happy with them. That price seems OK, but it is a while since I bought mine.
It is best to have the pyro sensor in the manifold before the turbo, generally considered the most reliable/accurate.
Only problem I had was with the boost gauge, I had to put a restrictor in the boost line going to the gauge as the needle would flutter, you could here the gauge chattering inside. I restricted it to a 1mm hole and the problem was solved. Some kits will have a restrictor in them for this.

Re: Ebay Pyro/Boost Gauge deal
I paid $250AUD for an autometer pyro and boost guage including postage from US. Arrived in about 4 days.
I was told 1-2" from the back of the turbo in the dump pipe. This is the safest spot such that if for some reason your temperature probe disintegrates, it just goes down your exhaust, not through your turbo
It's also alot eaiser to pull the dump pipe off and drill/tap it than to pull the exhaust manifold.

Re: Ebay Pyro/Boost Gauge deal
you can drill and tap the exhaust manifold with the turbo in place, being cast iron, drilling it doesn't produce big long shavings, only small granules which will just pass through the turbine and into the exhaust

Also surley the temp reading from 50mm one side of the turbo to 50mm the other side isn't going to make too much difference is it?

Re: Ebay Pyro/Boost Gauge deal
There have been documented differences of abt 200 deg from manifold side of turbo to dump pipe side..... the turbine takes pressure and heat out of the exhaust...DAVESGQ wrote:Also surley the temp reading from 50mm one side of the turbo to 50mm the other side isn't going to make too much difference is it?

Re: Ebay Pyro/Boost Gauge deal
I believe this can vary dramatically too, so the temp difference is not consistently 200degrees at any given timeRED60 wrote:There have been documented differences of abt 200 deg from manifold side of turbo to dump pipe side..... the turbine takes pressure and heat out of the exhaust...DAVESGQ wrote:Also surley the temp reading from 50mm one side of the turbo to 50mm the other side isn't going to make too much difference is it?

Re: Ebay Pyro/Boost Gauge deal
Yes this temperature difference depends on the actual temperature, the pressure drop across the turbine and how efficient the turbine is at that operating point.80's_delirious wrote:I believe this can vary dramatically too, so the temp difference is not consistently 200degrees at any given timeRED60 wrote:There have been documented differences of abt 200 deg from manifold side of turbo to dump pipe side..... the turbine takes pressure and heat out of the exhaust...DAVESGQ wrote:Also surley the temp reading from 50mm one side of the turbo to 50mm the other side isn't going to make too much difference is it?
Basically you can't predict it, so you're better to use a pre-turbo probe and eliminate all the guesswork.

Re: Ebay Pyro/Boost Gauge deal
is there a standard size and thread the the piro meter uses for the probe to screw into the manifold?
thanks, lozz

Re: Ebay Pyro/Boost Gauge deal
I also bought gauges off the same ebay seller from the states - ihavethebestpriceperformance@hotmail.com
Got the cobalt gauges that were going to cost a fortune here in Australia. I cant remember exactly what I paid for them but it was around $300.
