1hdft into hzj79?
hi there im wondering how possible it would be to fit the 24valve 1hdft into a hzj79 ute. would i need to upgrade to the later model h151? box. or do they come with them...? what else would need to be done for the conversion?

Re: 1hdft into hzj79?
are you wanting to keep it with the manual or go with the auto.
its very possible either way.
you just gotta find the motor, gearbox and every other bit you need which is will cost you about 15 grand from the wreckers if you can get a decent one.
are you wanting to do it your self or have a workshop take care of the whole conversion

Re: 1hdft into hzj79?
as zoltan said, just buy 1 with a fte in it. Your buying a 2 grand 79. It cant be much good. Myself and Zoltan have both built cruiser utes from the ground up (Zoltan has alot more invested than i do) but we both know what it takes. I have spent almost 30 grand on a 89 hj75 what ever you think your budget is TRIPLE IT and then some plus add 400 hours labour. Funny i paid 2 grand for my ute aswell and then thought 10 grand would cover it and it would be on the road in 2 months
Re: 1hdft into hzj79?
yea mate i know it takes alot to fix up a car. i aint some young fella with no knowledge. i know how much work goes into them i dont reckon it would be hard conversion anyway. i was just asking on other peoples thoughts on the hzj75 box, and other little things that would need to be done. i wouldnt ask these questions if i had considered buying a complete car. i can justify the 24+ thousand they want for em

Re: 1hdft into hzj79?
If you can, find an engine and gearbox complete. the 1HD-T, -FT,or -FTE all came with the H151 box standard in 80, 79 and 100 series. though apparently some of them had gear shifters in different positions on the box.
get one complete with transfer case also, as these are different between H series boxes and R series boxes

Re: 1hdft into hzj79?
I cannot see any problem or difficulty at all with the conversion its a no brainer con
dont use the r series box
go out and find a h series from a part time 80 or a factory td 79
they are diferent lengths the ones that are full time 4x4 have a center diff making the transfer longer
just need a 1hz bellhousing
the 1hdft is a none electrical engine and only came in late 80 series factory td so will go in place of the 1hz with no problems at all its a easy bolt in just use the mounts from a 1hz 79 sump from 80 is ok fan and rad from 79 series
i am currently putting a 1HDFTE into a hiluxed bodied 80 series plenty of knockers out there but they never get the really cool stuff done cause its all tooo hard
it wont take much longer or be any harder than bolting a stk 1hz into it
cheers

Re: 1hdft into hzj79?
exactly what Jonathan said.
Additionally:
The turbo diesel 7x series had 12mm fuel lines rather than the N/A's 10mm, so you should either replace the fuel lines with larger diam or add a low pressure (<10psi) pusher pump eg: walbro.
Also, because the g/box is longer, the shifters may come up in a different spot, use an FZJ75 trans tunnel cover plate or make your own.
You may also need to move the gearbox crossmember rearward and possibly mod the tubular chassis crossmember (there has been discussion on this on the forum)
Mine was a SWB so may not be exactly the same.

and shifters
i measured up the 1hz 79 series r box and the td 79 series h150 box and to my amazment they are exactly the same length from output flange to bellhousing face
i did it a few time because i did not believe it myself
but there is a difference in length between the old h55 and h150 as in 75 series cruisers with 1hz
so end result is no mods needed which was very cool for 79 series trucks when swapping boxes
yes and in your shorty it would have had the h55 and would have had to have moved the gearbox x member to fit h150
cheers

Re: 1hdft into hzj79?
Almost right
My SWB had a 5cyl 1PZ / R151F combo. The engine mount location differs between the 1pz and 1hz engines as my 1hdft engine fits (only just) very closely to the firewall and I had to use the 1PZ radiator in/out hoses to reach between the engine and rad. (identical except longer than 1HZ)
Additionally, the H series box has a number of different shifter configurations dependant on whether it is full-time/part-time 4wd. The partime actuation also differs between 70 series and the 80 series (70 series transfer lever mounted off 3 bosses on the RH side of the gearbox, 80 series part time mounted off top rear of gearbox). So I'd be interested to measure bellhousing to shifter pivot on both the R and H series boxes because I think they may be different (from memory but i could be wrong)
I can post up pictures of both later if anyones interested.
So becasue of a combination of the above, you are right, i had to move my crossmember and also make a trans tunnel cover. Not difficult though.
