Landcruiser transfer case dillema
I have a 80 series gxl with a HF2A transfer case. A bearing has gone and its making a hell of a racket. It has reductions gears and a part time kit fitted.
$$ are tight, So where is the best and cheapest place in brisbane to get it rebuilt??
The cheapest option so far is to just get 1 from the wrecker and swap it myself. But I will lose the part time and the reduction gears.

If you take the transfer out your self and take it to some one to rebuild it. It will cut the cost by about half. But honestly if you have the skill and ability to remove the transfer your self you should be able to rebuild it. After all you have to partly take it apart to get it off the trans. The bearings may need to be pressed on and off. I would suggest yu take it apart your self then take the shafts to your local little workshop and get them to press the bearings for you then rebuild it your self.
Honestly 2 weekends ago I had never even looked at a cruiser transfer and I was able to rebuild it in under an hour once I had it out.

I second that, I rebuilt my HiLux case with a mate and installed crawler gears/twin sticks in the process and it took us about 10 hours all up including removing the case. Neither of us had done it before, but we did have detailed instructions to help. Take lots of photos as you go, put the bolts in sealed bags and label where they came from, and ask around on here if you have questions, but it's not as hard a job as you think if you have some mechanical knowledge and the right tools. Seems like a shame to go back to a standard case of you have done the hard work already...

I have never removed a transfer case from the gearbox before. But I did fit the marks part time viscous differential to it. That didnt take long at all. Outer casing, cap and inner casing to expose the diff and low range gears. So what do I have to do to remove it completely? And wont I need special tools and detailed plans?

Mate, 80 series transfer is easy to remove unlike ye transfer cases of olde. you need to disconnect the breather and wiring connectors speedo etc. and undo the bolts. There are a couple of tricky ones at the front between the gearbox and front extension housing you need to get at too. Then lift it off. plastic hammer is recommended not screwdriver. might want someone to help you lift it off because it is heavy.

give it a go. if you cant get it out, do it back up and drive to a work shop.
if you do get it out but find you cant rebuild it, take it to a work shop and at least you saved fitting costs.
if you do get right through the job then, have a premium beer to enjoy some of the savings and new found knowledge.

Thanks heaps guys. Im a pro with transfer cases now. I got a cheap transfer case from someone on here (thanks mate, you know who you are). disconnected breather, wiring, dumped oil, whipped it out and chucked the other 1 in. Only to find the motor wiring harness, and speedo (cable to electric) different from 100 series to 80 series. So whipped it out again and swapped it all over including my part time diff. And your right its a heavy sun of a %$^#&.
Also found out that its not all the transfer case. Its the gearbox and the output bearing it chuttery when you rev it over 2000.
Now, $1700 for gearbox exchange and fitted
$2400 for gearbox and transfer
$1100 for 2nd hand box fitted
or I can get a rebuild kit syncro's, bearing and gaskets for $500
??????????
