To weld sliders to chassis or to bolt?
Hey blokes and bloketts, made up some u brackets out
Of 100x6mm flat bar to fit up to my
Chassis for rock sliders. My initial plan was to bolt but then the lazy me thought, puck it! Why not weld. Any thoughts from those who have tried and tested both? Cheers. Ps it's a Gq LWB.

Re: To weld sliders to chassis or to bolt?
i would bolt them on if this is a road use truck because up here in qld you need a approval letter from transport to weld on a chassis
means the car needs to go over the pits or if you get cought by the fun police you get a fine then it needs to go over to pits anyway to clear the defect just chech your states laws on it first
if your not worried i would weld a plate on with taped holes so you can still remove the slider if you want to
in gq wagons make sure if you weld the that you can still get the rear controls arm bolts out still you may have to take them out and put them inthe other way before you do it
hope this helps

Re: To weld sliders to chassis or to bolt?
Always reverse the situation for the right answer .......
I've got a set of siders that I have to take off a vehicle........
I hope they are ......
a/ bolted
b/ weded
Oh........ by the way .....
Weding to the chassis is illegal

I'm assuming you're central coast NSW yeah?
Every NSW engineer I've spoken to has said to bolt sliders on. If it's an offroad only rig then by all means, weld away, but I think you'll have trouble if you want it legal on road.

Re: To weld sliders to chassis or to bolt?
im in qld and my 4b has been over the pits countless amouts of times. they have never said anything abount my sliders being welded. i have welded a piece of channel to chassis then welded flatbar to end of tube to bolt onto channel. not saying its the right way or legal, ive just never been picked on it. they have had a flogging and work really well with about 2mm flex. its a hilux

Re: To weld sliders to chassis or to bolt?
We always bolt them on where possible, although there is nothing wrong with welded sidesteps if you resell the vehicle or do changes at a later date you may wish you bolted them on.
Saying that but comps trucks we always weld the mounting plates on.
Either way works just depends on your circumstances i guess.
